Tyler Anderson (real name Oleksii Kovalenko, Ukrainian: Олексі́й Коваленко; born 21 September 1993 in Rivne) — is a Ukrainian blogger from Zaporizhzhia who has two rather large Ukrainian-language[1] YouTube channels — Geek Journal (Ukrainian: Ґік Джорнал) and Tyleruto. As of January 2021, more than 130,000 people have subscribed to its main channel, and the video has garnered a total of almost 700,000 views.

Biography[edit]

Conflicts with 1+1 Media[edit]

In October 2020, a video about the show "Masquerade" was published, due to which the channel was accused by channel 1+1 of illegal use of the material, receiving the first "strike" in the fall, on October 28, 2020. After that, we had to briefly remove the video about "Masquerade" and 4 reviews of the series #School, but later the video was restored on the platform.

#SaveGeekJournal[edit]

In January 2021, critical reviews were filmed about Russian-language series on 1+1 and the history of this TV channel, after which the Geek Journal on January 21, 2021 received 4 strikes (out of 3 possible to block the YouTube channel), due to which the YouTube channel could cease to exist already on January 28.[2]

After the channel received four strikes from 1+1 Media, many people on social networks were outraged by the actions of the media holding 1+1 Media, so in Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Telegram and other networks appeared quite a lot of memes and the hashtag #SaveGeekJournal, which entered the trends of Twitter in Ukraine. However, the vast majority of Ukrainian-speaking YouTubers, public figures, journalists, politicians such as Padon, the Cursed Rationalist, Nina-Ukraine, Ragulivna, Serhii Prytula, Oleksii Honcherenko, Andrii Smolii and even Warner Bros. in Ukraine condemned the actions of 1+1 Media, supporting Tyler. Channel 5's "Chas Novyn" program dedicated a separate media scandal with a Ukrainian blogger and 1+1 Media.[3]

On January 23, 2021, Tyler announced that all four strikes had been removed from the YouTube channel.[4] It became known that a little earlier representatives of 1+1 Media contacted Oleksiy, offering him an agreement according to which he would have to release all videos related to 1+1 TV channel and refuse further criticism, after which they would be ready to withdraw complaints.[5]

On the same day, 1+1 Media stated that they had not withdrawn their complaint about the video on the Gick Journal YouTube channel, which contained content owned by the holding, allegedly that their main purpose was not to block the channel, but only to delete the video. 1+1 Media constantly emphasized that Tyler Anderson did not have the copyright to the fragments he used in his videos.[6] However, they continued to manipulate the principle of "fair use", saying that this principle does not include videos with monetization. However, behind the so-called "honest use", there are most YouTube channels in the world that deal with geek topics that do not give the right, such as global corporations such as The Walt Disney Company or Warner Bros., to restrict their review and critical activities.

YouTube Channels[edit]

Geek Journal[edit]

Geek Journal is one of the largest blogging channels on Ukrainian YouTube, which specializes in geek topics: review of tapes, series, including Ukrainian production, and their criticism. The channel was created on October 6, 2012, but the videos began appearing in May 2016.

The Geek Journal also stars Tyler's girlfriend, Yuliana Zhovanyk, who edits the video and is also a camerawoman. Together, they criticize and analyze some aspects of film and television production, using footage of these shows as "fair use". Dog Benjamin is also mentioned as part of their team.

Tyleruto[edit]

Tyleruto is Tyler Anderson's game channel, where streams of various games take place, such as Cyberpunk 2077, God of War, Detroit: Become Human, The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part II, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Tell Me Why , Marvel's Spider-Man, Minecraft, The Long Dark, Red Dead Redemption 2 and many more. The channel was founded on April 3, 2019 and now has more than 14 thousand subscribers and more than 300 thousand views.

Statistics[edit]

In five years of activity, the YouTube channel Gick Journal has been able to gather more than 100 thousand subscribers on the platform. It is worth noting that before the announcement of the conflict with 1 + 1 Media in the media, which could lead to the blocking of the largest Ukrainian geek channel, the number of subscribers increased sharply. As of January 20, 2021, the number of subscribers was more than 96 thousand, and as of January 23, 2021, the number of subscribers reached 130 thousand, ie three days after the announcement of the scandal, the YouTube channel received more than 30 thousand subscribers.

To prevent the blockade, which could take place on January 28, 2021, a backup channel Tyler Anderson / Geek Journal was created, which gained more than 75 thousand subscribers in three days, which was an absolute record for Ukrainian YouTube.
