Ivan Leonidovych Semesyuk (born November 21, 1979, in Kyiv) is a Ukrainian artist, writer, poet, musician, cultural figure, and author of media projects.

Biography[edit]

Born on November 21, 1979, in Kyiv. Parents - mother Semesyuk Maryna Vadymivna - artist, father Semesyuk Leonid Ivanovych - architect. Ivan Semesyuk has a degree in art (National Academy of Visual Arts and Architecture), majoring in sculpture.

Revolution of Dignity[edit]

He took an active part in the Maidan Revolution in 2013-2014 and was also one of its prominent speakers on social networks. Member of the Artistic Barbican, which emerged as a platform for creative and physical resistance to Yanukovych's government during the Revolution of Dignity, located opposite the Khreshchatyk metro station. Numerous cultural and artistic events took place in its "walls" - art exhibitions, literary readings, lectures and more. Barbican served as a technical base for making "Molotov cocktails" and resting place.[1] In 2015, the publishing house Lyuta Sprava presented at the Lviv Publishers' Forum an anthology of creative resistance "Barbican. Painting[edit]

Zhlob-Art and UFA (Chav-Art Union of Free Artists "Will or Death!"). 2008-2013 - co-founder and head of the creative group of UFA, within which the Zhlob-art cultural and art project was created and received publicity. He is one of the founders of Zhlob-Art, which recorded and researched Chavs as a socio-cultural phenomenon. As part of the project, he created canonical paintings: "The twat and the Pigeons", "Nothing to work with", "Twats Enlightenment", "District Jumanji", and others. Zhlob-Art was completed on November 21, 2013, the day of the beginning of the Revolution of Dignity.

Textile[edit]

2008 - 2021, he created textile paintings (hand embroidery, needle and thread). The paintings (namely the series of "Banderyky - a moving junta"[2]) stay in the collection of the Revolution of Dignity Museum. Some are in private collections in Ukraine and abroad.

Music[edit]

Ivan Semesyuk is the founder of the power country band Pyriatyn (musical group) [uk] (2016) and a member of the musical alternative folk group Ukie'z (2019).

Literature[edit]

In 2014, the Luta Sprava publishing house published the author's first book, "Diary of Ukrainian-eater".[3] In 2015, Luta Sprava published the novel "Evolution or Death". Also, "The Adventures of Thomas the Baboon" won the International Prize in Nonconformist Literature - the Oles Ulyanenko Prize.[4] In 2016, the same publishing house published a sequel called "Farshrutka", and in 2019 a collection of lyrical poetry "Apache Heart".

Also, in 2018, the collection of poems "Nothing to work with" was published by the Iron Dad publishing house.

Media[edit]

In 2018, he authored and hosted the Evolution or Death program on Old Fashioned Radio, releasing 78 podcasts over three seasons. The same radio station broadcasted his project, Transatlantic, dedicated to Irish, Scottish and American folk music traditions. In 2021-2022 he was the author and host of the media project "Instruction UA" about Ukrainian identity in space and time, created for the digital department of Suspilne Media (YouTube channel Anthropolohia)[5](2021-2022).
