Tyr: Chains of Valhalla is an indie action platform video game developed by Mexican indie studio Ennui Studio. It was released for PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows on Steam on May 8, 2018.[1][2]

Gameplay

Inspired by Contra and Mega Man X, players must shoot enemies and complete difficult platforming challenges to finish a stage. The twist is that the player has only one hour (game time) to complete all stages. Rather than giving you several lives, the game has no death other than running out of time. You can use chips earned after defeating a boss to unlock passive upgrades and make each subsequent attempt faster.[3]

Plot

The game follows Tyr, creation of Professor Oswald Din, armored with Gungnir, the weapon of the Gods, and Huggin & Munnin, a duo of AI that serves as comic relief and helps with the mission to prevent Lemuz Oki from destroying the world order and creating a new realm of chaos to seize the biggest technology company and control the entire world.[2]

Development

Tyr: Chains of Valhalla began development after a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in the fall of 2017.[3]

The idea behind the game was due to the director's belief that Capcom had ceased to make enough Mega Man titles, and that he and other fans desired more of the same type of gameplay.[3]

The developer's main focus was on the gamefeel and getting it to play in a similar manner to Mega Man but retaining a vision of extreme difficulty from the early Contra series. The most difficult aspect in developing the game was the studio's little experience with consoles or Steam releases, it being their first non-mobile-based game. [3]

Soundtrack

The game's soundtrack was composed by Andrew Sitkov and includes Power Metal elements.[4]

Reception

Tyr: Chains of Valhalla received "mixed or average" reviews.[5][6][7] While many praised the soundtrack and visual elements of the game, several found that the unresponsive controls and the lack of a proper introduction made it a more difficult than enjoyable experience. The studio released a patch exactly one month later after release to address these issues.[8] They also published a demo to try to convince the community to try their fixed game,[9] which had some moderate success in improving players' perceptions afterward.[10][11]
