Udupi Hidden camera case
In July 2023, three female students at a paramedical college in Udupi district, Karnataka, India filmed another student in the college's restroom.[1] The case garnered significant media attention and sparked debates about privacy, safety, and communal tensions.
Incident[edit]
The alleged filming incident occurred on July 18 between 2:30 pm and 3 pm within the premises of the paramedical college.[2] The three accused students reportedly filmed the victim without her consent while she was using the restroom. The incident came to light on July 20 when protests erupted at the college over the issue.[2]
Aftermath[edit]
Following the discovery of the incident, the college management allegedly came under pressure from Bajrang Dal and other student organisations to take action. The 3 girls were made to give an undertaking [3] and let off.
However, by July 25, the college management finally announced the suspension of the three accused girls during a press meet. Subsequently, the Udupi district police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and booked the three students, along with the college management board, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act.[4] The charges included intending to insult the modesty of a woman, intentionally omitting to produce a document, destroying any document or electronic record, and common intention.
According to the chairman of the college, the women students who were accused said it was meant to be a prank and deleted the video in front of the victim.[5] The National Commission for Women took note of the incident and its member Khushbu Sunder arrived in Udupi on July 26 to look into the matter.[6]
