Laila Ulla-Maija Eho-Saario (born 4 July 1959 in Helsingin maalaiskunta, Finland) is a Finnish cantor, organist and choral conductor. Eho-Saario has worked over 30 years for the Evangelical-Lutheran parish of Vihti and she conducts three different choirs there. The Finnish defence minister has awarded Eho-Saario with the Finnish Frontveteran Association's (Rintamaveteraaniliitto) Grand Cross for Eho-Saario's work for the veterans of the Finnish wars.[1]

Biography[edit]

Laila Ulla-Maija Eho was born on the 4th of July 1959 in Helsingin maalaiskunta in Southern Finland for a family of farmers. Eho has four siblings. As a child Eho attended piano lessons and started studying in music school at the age of 9. Along with music Eho also dreamed of a career as an author. Ulla Eho attended secondary school and upper secondary school in Tuusula. She graduated from faculty of church music in Helsinki Art University's Sibelius Academy in 1987. In Sibelius Academy Eho met mr. Timo Saario whom she later married and changed her last name to Eho-Saario. The couple has two children and the family lives in Siuntio, Finland.[1]

Eho-Saario's family estate, Fallinpelto farm, is located in district of Korso in what is nowadays called the city of Vantaa.[1]

On her spare time Eho-Saario runs a parent-child musical play school.[1]

Work life[edit]

Ulla Eho-Saario started her career as a cantor in the evangelical-lutheran parish of Karjalohja in 1984. On the 1st of May in 1990 Eho-Saario started her over thirty years lasting career in the parish of Vihti as a cantor, organist and choral conductor. She conducts a girl choir Piritat, Vihdin Reserviläiskuoro -a choir consisting of local reserve officers and choir Vihdin Päiväkuoro. Previously Eho-Saario has also conducted the Veteran Choir of Vihti (Vihdin Veteraanikuoro) but the choir stopped functioning when the last members of local veterans passed away.[2][3][4]

The girl choir Piritat is a choir that has longest been conducted by Eho-Saario; she's been the conductor over 30 years. The choir performs usually during services in Vihti church and in parish events but Piritat has also performed internationally. The choir has travelled to for example Edinburgh, Budapest, Tallinn, Eskilstuna and several other Swedish cities and several cities in coastal Spain. Eho-Saario has even recorded several CDs with Piritat choir.[3][4]

Awards[edit]

The chapter of the Diocese of Espoo has awarded Eho-Saario with the honorary title Director Cantus. She has also received the special cantor's badge of merit from the Finnish Association of Church Music (Suomen Kirkkomusiikkiliitto) to thank her for her work for Finnish church music. The Finnish Reserve Officers' Federation (Suomen Reserviupseeriliitto) has awarded Eho-Saario with the federation's bronze medal for Eho-Saario's work to achieve the objectives of the federation. The Finnish Alliance of the Veterans of War (Suomen Sotaveteraaniliitto), Finnish Association of the Invalids of War (Suomen Sotainvalidiliitto) and the Finnish Association of the Front Veterans (Suomen Rintamaveteraaniliitto) have all awarded Eho-Saario with the golden medals for her distinguished work for the wellbeing of the Finnish veterans of war. The Finnish defence minister has awarded Eho-Saario with the Finnish Frontveteran Association's Grand Cross for Eho-Saario's work for the veterans of the Finnish wars.[1]
