Ultra Abu Dhabi is an annual electronic dance music (EDM) festival held in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. The festival showcases some of the world's most renowned DJs and electronic music artists, attracting thousands of music enthusiasts from around the globe. It is a part of the Ultra Music Festival franchise, which originated in Miami, Florida, in 1999.

History[edit]

The inaugural Ultra Abu Dhabi was supposed to take place in 2020, bringing together dance music enthusiasts from various parts of the world. The event is a collaborative effort between the Ultra Worldwide organization and local partners in the United Arab Emirates. The success and reputation of Ultra Music Festival paved the way for its expansion to Abu Dhabi, attracting a global audience and contributing to the city's growing reputation as a hub for entertainment and culture.

However, due to the global Covid-19 outbreak, the show, being fully set up at the venue, was forced to cancel and is the first music festival show to be cancelled because of Covid-19.

2020[edit]

The inaugural edition of Ultra Abu Dhabi took place on March 5-6, 2020, at the iconic Yas Island, a popular entertainment destination. It marked the first time that the Ultra Music Festival brand extended its reach to the Middle East, bringing its unique blend of music, culture, and production to the region.[1]

The first edition featured a stellar lineup of artists like Eric Prydz, DJ Snake, Alesso, Zedd, Major Lazer and many more for a total of 43 artists across 3 stages. [2]

2021 - 2022[edit]

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the festival was forced to make some adjustments. The second edition, originally scheduled for March 2021, was postponed to 2022, and subsequently, the 2022 edition was also postponed to 2023 to ensure the safety and well-being of attendees.

2023[edit]

Ultra Abu Dhabi finally made its long-awaited Middle East debut at the Etihad Park in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi on March 4 and 5,

Topping the bill for Ultra Abu Dhabi 2023 are — Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Afrojack, Sasha and Digweed, Adam Beyer, Amelie Lens, Illenium, Kshmr, Nghtmre and many more, totalling 30 artists across 2 stages. [3]

Due to an illness, Afrojack was replaced with Armin Van Buuren. [4]

Ultra Worldwide[edit]

In 2008, Ultra began Ultra Worldwide — starting with Ultra Brasil, which took place in São Paulo, Brasil, now moving to Rio de Janeiro in 2016.[5] Since then, Ultra has debuted worldwide festivals in Buenos Aires, Argentina (Ultra Buenos Aires);[6] Santiago, Chile (Ultra Chile);[6] Seoul, Korea (Ultra Korea);[7] Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa (Ultra South Africa);[8] Tokyo, Japan (Ultra Japan);[8] Abu Dhabi; Bali, Indonesia (Ultra Bali);[9] Singapore (Ultra Singapore);[10] and Ibiza, Spain (Ultra Ibiza).[7] In July 2013, Ultra Worldwide debuted Ultra Europe, also known as Destination Ultra, which takes place across the span of a week throughout different venues across Croatia.[11]

2012 began the event concept entitled Road to Ultra, which are single-day, single-stage events. Road to Ultra events have taken place in Thailand, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Colombia, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Macau, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. In 2016, Road to Ultra took place in Hong Kong for the first time, at the West Kowloon Cultural District.[12]

During the 2017 edition of Ultra Miami, it was announced that India and Australia would host Road to Ultra events starting in 2017.[13][14] Also included in the announcement was an expansion to Shanghai with Ultra China, a two-day festival taking place at Shanghai, China, taking place September 9–10, 2017.[15] In late May, it was announced that Ultra Mexico would take place in Mexico City at the Foro Pegaso from October 6–7, 2017.[16]

In 2017, Ultra also began to expand the Resistance brand into its own event series, beginning with an 11-date international tour headlined by Sasha and John Digweed in 2017, along with an eight-week, Tuesday residence at Privilege Ibiza. In February 2018, it was announced that a three-day Resistance Mexico City festival would be held from May 25–27, 2018.[17][18]

In India, Road to Ultra: India first took take place in New Delhi and Mumbai during September 2017.[19][20] As for Australia, Road to Ultra: Australia took place in Melbourne in February 2018. It was later announced that a second event in Sydney would be added for 2019.[21][22][23] In March 2020, Road To Ultra: India returned, but was held days before the pandemic began.

In November 2020, Road to Ultra: Taiwan marked Ultra's first large-scale event since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.[24]
