Unicorn is a group of companies providing information systems and IT solutions to businesses across various industries, such as banking[1], insurance, e-mobility, energy and utilities[2][3], communications and media, manufacturing[4], commerce and public administration.[5][6]
Founded in 1990 by Vladimír Kovář[7][8], the company has grown to become one of the largest IT companies in the Czech Republic, with over 2,500 employees and 25 development centers located in 20 cities across six European countries as of February 2023.[9]
History of the company[edit]
Unicorn's turnover was over $1 million within two years of its founding in 1992.[10] In 1997, the company changed its form to a joint-stock company, and in 2000, it expanded abroad with the establishment of its first foreign development center in Bratislava, Slovakia.[11] The company founded Unicorn University in 2007, and opened development branches in Kyiv, Ukraine in 2011 and Arnhem, the Netherlands in 2014. In recent years, Unicorn has acquired several companies focusing on different industries through acquisitions.[12]
Areas of operation[edit]
The most important area of operation is the supply of IT systems for the energy industry.[13] Its systems control important electricity flows in Europe. The company developed and commissioned the BritNed Control Point System (BNCPS), which controls the level and direction of power flow in real-time on the BritNed subsea interconnector between the Netherlands and Great Britain.[14][15] It also supplied the Interconnexion France-Angleterre 2 Dispatch System (IFA2DS) for the IFA2 submarine interconnector under the English Channel and the dispatching system for the Nemo Link submarine interconnector between Great Britain and Belgium.[16][17]
Unicorn's other area of activity is the supply of IT systems for banking and insurance, with a focus on providing important systems for the largest Czech banks and insurance companies. An example of its solution is a tool for the electronic signature of contracts, which saves paper and is environmentally friendly.[18]
In recent years, Unicorn has been focusing on the field of electromobility[19] and the supply of charging stations and a sophisticated control system.[20] Its system provides control of charging stations in Gothenburg, Sweden.[21]
