Universal Sompo General Insurance Co. Ltd is a joint venture of Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Karnataka Bank Ltd, Dabur Investment Corporation and a leading general insurer from Japan, Sompo Japan Insurance Inc.
It has a footprint across the country to serve its customers with 17 Zonal Offices, 86 Branch Offices and a 1500-strong workforce. It offers a wide range of products catering to Retail, Rural, SME & Corporate customer segments. It is innovating in the health insurance space and offers both standalone policies and co-branded products in conjunction with its bank partners. It serves customers through a vast and compliant distribution network of banks, agents, brokers, auto dealers, POSPs, CSCs and so on. It continues to invest in technology ensuring a smooth purchase experience for customers and rapid integration facilities for distributors.
Corporate history
The Company received its Licence and Certificate of Registration from IRDA in November 2007. The joint venture has been capitalized with shareholders’ funds of over ₹435.80 crore, including share premium. Three of the Indian partners are leading banks with a combined asset base of ₹92,602 crore and over 4000 branches and distribution centers. Plus the 4th largest FMCG Company in India with over 15 million retail outlets. Sompo Japan Insurance Inc., headquartered in Tokyo, with a capital of 70 billion yen, is present in 27 countries – has over 15,000 employees and 69,028 agents and its total premium income for 2006 – 2007 was in excess of (equivalent to) ₹50,000 crore, twice that of the Indian General insurance industry. Universal Sompo General Insurance Co. Ltd has a Gross Written Premium (GWP) of ₹2,864.71 crore for the year ended March 31, 2020.
