The School of Professional & Continuing Studies is a school of the University of Richmond and was established in 1962.[1] It offers degree and non-degree programs targeted primarily toward adults and working professionals in Richmond, Virginia, and the surrounding area.
The school was originally named University College and included both a two-year junior college and an evening division.[1] It was located on the original location of Richmond College on the corner of Grace and Lombardy Streets[2] in Richmond's Fan district. In 1974, the school moved from the Columbia Building at Grace & Lombardy to the main campus in Richmond's West End.
In 1994, the school was renamed the School of Continuing Studies in alignment with names of the other schools of the university. In 2012, it was renamed the School of Professional & Continuing Studies to better reflect the character of its students and the nature of its programs.[1]
Degree Programs[edit]
The school offers Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Bachelor of Science in Professional Studies degrees, with majors in HR Management, Information Security, Interdisciplinary Studies, IT Management, Liberal Arts and Paralegal Studies.[3]
The school offers Master of Education degrees in Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership & Policy Studies. It also offers the Master of HR Management (MRHM), the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA), the Master of Nonprofit Studies (MNS), and the Master of Teaching (MT) degrees.[4]
The school also several offers post-baccalaureate academic certificates. Undergraduate-level Certificates of Applied Studies (CAS) are offered in Information Security, Information Systems and Paralegal Studies. Graduate-level Graduate Certificates (GC) are offered in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, HR Management, Nonprofit Studies and Public History.[5]
Notable Faculty[edit]
- Dr. Erik Nielson, assistant chair and associate professor of Liberal Arts, is well known as an expert in the use of rap music as evidence in criminal trials.
- Dr. Dan Roberts, chair and professor of Liberal Arts, is a historian and executive producer and host of the award-winning radio series, A Moment in Time, which is broadcast worldwide.[6][7]

- Certified Personal Trainer preparation classes in partnership with World Instructor Training Schools (W.I.T.S.)[12]
- SHRM Learning System preparing for the SHRM-CP[13] and SHRM-SCP[14] certifications
