Unkle Luc (1988-present) is a Haitian American visual artist known for his glitchy, provocative graphic art and music videos.[1]

Biography[edit]

Unkle Luc was born on May 19, 1988 to Haitian parents. He grew up and continues to reside in Miami, Florida.

Career[edit]

In the early 2010's, Luc was hired to shoot videos by fellow South Florida-based artists such as ¡Mayday!, Robb Bank$ and Denzel Curry early in their respective careers. With some viral success on several videos, Luc's visuals attracted the likes of national acts outside of Florida such as Future, A$AP Mob, Shy Glizzy, City Morgue, SOB x RBE, Mulatto, and more. In 2015, New Times named him one of "South Florida's Six Best Underground Rap Videographers."[2]

Controversy[edit]

In 2012, Unkle Luc creative directed a project with fellow South Florida creative SydneyInTheory (formerly known as Personal) entitled The Wild EP, containing music by Personal and visuals by Luc. The artwork featured various images such as animals juxtaposed in unconventional environments, including one of an elephant in front of skyscraper building. Ambitious to get the work out there, Luc managed to email it to Kanye West in April of 2012. To Luc's surprise, West replied, stating that "This work is amazing," and the two exchanged some brief emails afterwards. The next month, Kanye released the video for "No Church In The Wild," featuring the same imagery of an elephant in the metropolitan cityscape. Over the years, additional images used by West would ultimately surface and receive comparisons to the works of Unkle Luc.[3][4]
