Unzer Group GmbH, headquartered in Berlin, is a payment company that offers integrated payment and software solutions for brick-and-mortar retailers and online businesses (e-commerce), a so-called payment service provider. The group employs a total of around 750 people in eight branches in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Luxembourg. Around 85,000 retailers across Europe use Unzer's products and services.

History

Unzer is a merger company supervised by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority, the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) and the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier in Luxembourg.

In August 2019, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) joined as a strategic investor and acquired a majority stake in the company.

On 8 July 2021, it was announced that the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) had initiated a special audit against Unzer E-Com GmbH, a subsidiary of Unzer. In August 2022, the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) published the results of its special audit and imposed a fine and a temporary ban on new customers for Unzer E-Com GmbH.[1] In addition, a special representative was appointed to monitor the implementation of the measures ordered.

In the summer of 2023, it was announced that the financial investor Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) would withdraw and sell the majority of its shares in the company to a consortium of existing investors.[2][3] Since October 2024, Goldman Sachs, Alcentra and Partners Group have been the new majority owners.

In October 2024, the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) completely lifted the measures against Unzer's subsidiary Unzer E-Com GmbH.[4]

Products and offering

Unzer provides both hardware, such as point-of-sale (POS) devices, and software solutions including online checkout, unified commerce, and analytics tools for merchants.[5] Operating across online and in-store channels, Unzer integrates multiple payment methods within a single platform.[6] Unzer focuses on innovations such as open banking, buy-now-pay-later options, and mobile POS systems, and has formed strategic partnerships with companies like Mastercard.[7]
