"VKTM" is a song by Romanian producer Sickotoy, singer Inna and TAG.[upper-alpha 1] It was released for digital download and streaming as a single on 29 May 2020 by Global Records. Breyan Isaac wrote the song, while Sickotoy received credit as the sole producer. Lyrically, Inna sings about falling in love and feeling vulnerable. The song is an EDM and house track that prominently utilizes an oriental instrument in its Brazilian bass-inspired drop.

A reviewer noted "VKTM" as a departure from Inna's deep house predecessors and likened it to the works of Ukraininan singer Maruv. An accompanying music video was uploaded to Sickotoy's YouTube channel simultaneously with the single release. Directed by Bogdan Păun, the video shows Inna performing to the song in several settings, often accompanied by four female dancers. The singer's image was noted to be more sexualized than in previous recent music videos. Commercially, "VKTM" debuted at number 92 on Romania's Airplay 100 chart.

Background and composition[edit]

"VKTM" was composed by its lyricist Breyan Isaac and the producer Sickotoy. The latter's real name is Alex Cotoi, with whom Inna had previously worked on the production of "Te Vas" (2019).[2][3] Global Records released "VKTM" for digital download and streaming as a single on 29 May 2020.[4] It stands as Inna's first single on which she is not credited as the sole lead artist since "We Wanna" (2015), with Alexandra Stan.[5]

Over an electronic instrumental, Inna sings about being a "victim of love" and having "unexplainable" feelings when vulnerable. Sickotoy recalled the session in which the song was created, saying they had "complete musical freedom", while a member of TAG called the track "unique" because of its "vulnerable, indulgent [and] rebellious" nature.[6][7] Musically, "VKTM" features an EDM and house sound in comparison to Inna's deep house predecessors "Not My Baby" and "Sober", from 2020, and is also inspired by the genres of industrial, folk, indie pop, and rock. The song's drop has been noted to be influenced by Brazilian bass, and prominently utilizes an oriental instrument.[1][6]

Reception[edit]

A black-haired woman in a black outfit is seen performing onstage.
Elements from both the song and its music video have been likened to the works of Ukrainian singer Maruv.[1]

Writing for CelebMix, Jonathan Currinn praised the production of the song and Inna's vocals, yet criticized the shallow lyrics. He furthermore likened the track to the works of Ukrainian singer Maruv.[1] Dance-Chart's Jannik Pesenacker viewed "VKTM" as a "special", "innovative" and "interesting" experiment, and commended Inna's vocal delivery. He concluded: "The number is definitely unique! [...] [S]uch varied, innovative tracks are rarely released."[6] Commercially, "VKTM" debuted at number 92 on Romania's Airplay 100 chart on the week ending 12 July 2020.[8]

Music video[edit]

A music video for "VKTM" was uploaded to Sickotoy's YouTube channel on 29 May 2020 while preceded by a teaser released on 25 May through the same platform.[2][9] The visual was directed by Bogdan Păun, while Alexandru Mureșan acted as the director of photography. Andra Marta and Cristina Poszet wrote the script, and Loops Production handled production.[2] The clip opens with Inna sitting on a couch, wearing a black outfit. Four female dancers subsequently emerge from behind the couch and perform choreography around the singer. All five also perform synchronized movements in another room, before distorted footage of solely the dancers on the couch is shown.[2]

In another setting, Inna is seen sporting a black top and jeans while sitting on an armchair in front of a screen that displays multicoloured footage; strobe light flickers on her. As the video continues, similar clips are shown alongside interspersed shots showing the dancers performing choreography around and pushing chairs, footage of an elevator, Inna wearing a neon yellow outfit in a green room, and Sickotoy sporting sunglasses.[2] Currinn praised the "current and contemporary" music video, likening its nature to Inna's "Club Rocker" (2011) visual. He further noted that the singer's image was more sexualized than in her recent works, and compared the BDSM influences to Maruv's music videos.[1] A visual for an extended version of "VKTM" was released on 14 June 2020.[10]
