VTEX is a global ecommerce and online marketplace solution for businesses.
VTEX has offices in 16 countries, and operates in more than 32 countries. Brands serviced on the VTEX platform include Motorola, Stanley Black & Decker, AB InBev, Whirlpool, Samsung, Walmart, Sony, Nestlé, and Unilever, among others.[1][2][3]
History
VTEX was founded in 1999 in Rio de Janeiro by Mariano Gomide de Faria and Geraldo Thomaz. Initially a software firm selling solutions for the apparel industry, VTEX transitioned into an ecommerce platform in 2007 when they partnered with Walmart to expand their business to new markets[4].
In 2010, VTEX restructured the platform into a multi-tenant SaaS solution based on a microservices architecture. The platform uses the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure[5].
South African internet company, Naspers, purchased a 27.7% stake in VTEX in its Series A funding round in 2012[6]. Private equity firm Riverwood Capital bought Naspers’ stake in 2015[7].
VTEX acquired other Brazilian technology companies including SMB-focused platforms Nixus and Loja Integrada in 2013[8], Xtech Commerce in 2017[9] and Ciashop[10] and Simples[11] in 2019.
Other acquisitions include fashion ecommerce platform Primordia in 2015[12] and omnichannel software Indeva in 2018[13]. In 2020, VTEX bought AI-powered search platform Biggy and dLieve, a logistics startup (now VTEX Intelligent Search and VTEX Tracking, respectively)[14].
Global Expansion
In 2012, VTEX expanded to neighboring countries in Latin America. It now has offices in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Mexico City, Mexico; Santiago, Chile; Bogota and Medellin, Colombia[15].
European offices were established, starting with Barcelona in 2016[16], Bucharest in 2018[17] and Milan in 2019[18]. The global headquarters moved to London in 2018[19].
In 2019, VTEX acquired American ecommerce platform UniteU[20]. Later that year, the company received a USD 140M Series B funding round from SoftBank Group and other investors as part of their global expansion and to fuel product innovation[21].
In 2020, VTEX opened a US headquarters in New York City[22] and former senior management from SAP Hybris, Magento and Elastic Path joined their team[23].
VTEX announced an investment of USD 20M into growing their Latin American operations[24].
Technology
VTEX Commerce Cloud is a multi-tenant microservices-based, API-first ecommerce platform launched in 2010.
Other solutions include a Content Management System (CMS), Product Information Management (PIM), and a pricing and promotions engine.
In 2018, VTEX launched VTEX.io, a development platform used for the creation of applications[25], including progressive web apps, (PWA)-ready web stores, custom admin interfaces and back-office applications. This technology is used by Motorola to support their global ecommerce sites[26].
VTEX Day
VTEX organizes a digital innovation event in Latin America, VTEX Day[27]. Held at the São Paulo Expo in São Paulo, VTEX Day attracts more than 15,000 attendees annually over the two-day event[28]
Keynote speakers include former US President Barack Obama in 2019[29], Iron Maiden front man Bruce Dickinson in 2018[30] and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson in 2017[31]. The 2020 edition confirmed the participation of former US First Lady Michelle Obama and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, however, this was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic[32].
