Vahimsa

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Vahimsa is the combination of the two words vegan and ahimsa which means "not to injure, non violence". The word was created to provide a meaningful name to a vegan intentional community that is built on the foundation of living a vegan lifestyle, not causing harm, and living in harmony with nature. Vahimsa is a vegan campground[1].

The community is located in the Coal Region of Pennsylvania near the Susquehanna river.

From the Vahimsa website, "Members of this community have the common goal of working towards animal liberation and spreading the message of veganism. Our community will be a catalyst to bring change to the surrounding areas and make our region a hub for the animal rights & vegan movements."[1]

All of the dwellings are off the grid and qualify as tiny houses. All products that are brought into the community are considered vegan and generally environmentally-friendly. A requirement of entering the community is that you possess no animal products.

Presently, the location has sites available to vegans and vegetarians who are interested in veganism or becoming vegan. It is also the meeting place for monthly vegan potluck dinners and a Vahimsa Veg Fest in autumn, and events related to the Coal Region Vegans[2] group which meets in nearby downtown Shamokin, Pennsylvania.

Maria Bressi is the creator, operator, and first resident.

Earthday Campground[edit]
