The valdotanian nationalism is a nationalist political movement which seek self-determination (more autonomy, or the Independence, or the incorporation of the Aosta Valley, autonomous region into France).

Origins[edit]

The Aosta Valley is a territory whose original language is arpitan, although the French was traditionnaly used as cultural language. Politically united with the County of Savoy during the Middle Age, the Aosta Valley had his own legislation collected in a Coutimier and was organized into the Congrégations Générales. When the Duchy of Savoy became the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1720, these particularities was maintained until their abolition by Charles Albert of Sardinia in 1848. But in 1860, it was separated from the Savoy, annexed by France, since the Valley became part of the new Kingdom of Italy. Until this, the official use of French was guaranteed in the Kingdom of Sardinia, but from this moment, the Valdotanian people [fr] became a linguistic minority.
