The Varanasi City Police Commissionerate (VCPC) is the law enforcement agency for the city of Varanasi, the third largest city of Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a part of Uttar Pradesh Police and has a responsibilities of investigation and law and order within the municipal limits of Varanasi.
It is headed by the commissioner of police who is of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) rank and is appointed by the home minister of Uttar Pradesh.
The current and the first police commissioner of Varanasi is IPS Satish Ganesh.[1]

After the success of previous police commissionerates of Lucknow City and Gautam Buddha Nagar the state government decided to implement commissionerate system in other 2 metropolitan cities of Uttar Pradesh.
On 25 March 2021, the cabinet of Uttar Pradesh passed the order of making 2 commissionerates in the cities of [2]

After the implementation of commissionerate system the Varanasi District was divided into two police jurisdiction - Varanasi City Police Commissionerate which covers the urban areas of the district, and the Varanasi Rural Police which was having the rural areas of Varanasi. In Varanasi commissionerate there will be 18 police stations including one each for women and tourists, while Varanasi (rural) will have 10 police stations[3]
Before the implementation of commissionerate system Varanasi Police was headed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and was under the Varanasi Range and Varanasi Division.
Organization[edit]
The Varanasi City Police Department is headed by a Police Commissioner, who is an IPS officer. The position is currently held by A Satish Ganesh, IPS of the 1996 batch. The Varanasi City Police comes under the state Home Ministry/Department. Currently Varanasi City Police comprises Commissioner of Police (1), Joint Commissioner of Police (2), Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (8), Assistant Commissioner of Police (9). Under the Varanasi commissionerate police system, the city has been divided into two zones Varuna and Kashi. Apart from DCPs, each zone will also have additional DCPs. Three circle's , Dashaswamedh, Kotwali and Bhelupur will fall under Kashi zone jurisdiction while Chetganj and Cantt circles will be under Varuna zone.[4]there are 28 Police Stations, each headed by a Senior Police Inspector. There are 3–4 Police Chowkies for each Police Station. In Varanasi Police Commissionerate there are 89 Police Chowkies.
