Vedad Mešanović (born 27 September 1991) is a Bosnian entrepreneur, songwriter and philanthropist. He is best known for co-founding an artificial intelligence research company GliaLab that was praised by the chief executive officer (CEO) of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google LLC. Sundar Pichai.[1][2][3] Vedad was named the Founder of the Year in Serbia in 2019 by Central European Startup Awards[4], one of the largest independent startup ecosystem awards ceremonies in Europe[5], supported by partners such as Microsoft, IBM, and Deloitte.

Early Life[edit]

Vedad was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1991 to Ramiza and Alija Mešanović. He is the youngest child of five. His father was a chess player and political activist who supported the organization of 1984 Winter Olympics games in Sarajevo and was on the board of the Muslim charity organization “Merhamet”.

Vedad finished the International Baccalaureate® (IB) IB Diploma Programme, one of the leading international educational programmes, where he was 100,000th IB candidate in the world.[6]

Career[edit]

In 2016, Vedad co-founded GliaLab with Abu Qader, a young software developer from Chicago. Just a few months after its launch, GliaLab received support from companies like Nvidia[7] and started quickly gaining headlines in media outlets across the globe such as Adweek[8], Business Insider and Billboard[9], with some outlets going as far as calling Vedad and his co-founder the next Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.[10] The company worked on the development of AI diagnostic tools for diseases such as breast cancer and its technology has facilitated the diagnosis and treatment for more than 15,000 patients.[11] Due to numerous requests by medical enterprises and lack of appropriate industry resources, the company open-sourced its technology to other developers and larger institutions and officially closed its doors in 2018.

Following the success of GliaLab, Vedad started working with other international companies on their research and development projects. In 2018, he was selected as the lead advisor for Dash (cryptocurrency) in Serbia where he co-organized a blockchain conference with Rotary International, United Nations Global Compact and KPMG.[12] It was the first-ever blockchain event in the region that attracted various political, media and business leaders from companies and institutions such as the US Embassy, Embassy of Sweden, United Nations Development Programme, GoDaddy, UNICEF, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Center for Investment and Finance, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, World Wide Fund for Nature, etc. The same year, Vedad won the SEE-IT Summit Award 2018 (Best Technology & Innovation) for his financial blockchain project.

Music Career[edit]

In 2010, Vedad co-founded MouseMiles, a Bosnian Hip Hop music group, which became the first music group in the rap category from Bosnia and Herzegovina to sign a contract with a major recording label.[13] After spending two years performing around Bosnia and Herzegovina and doing private event bookings with institutions such as the US embassy in Sarajevo, the group entered The X Factor Adria competition in 2013, the first Adriatic edition of the famous music talent show. As soon as their initial audition was aired, Dnevnik.hr, a Croatian online media publication, called them the boys who delighted the region. [14] One of the largest Bosnian showbusiness online media outlets reported that when the American Hip Hop artist, 50 Cent, was performing in Croatia, Vedad’s name was on the invite guest list.[15]

After making it to live performances stage of the competition, the group decided to leave the show due to private reasons.[16] Soon afterward, it was announced that MouseMiles received attention from international music managers and signed a contract with Mascom Records, the exclusive regional partner of Warner Music Group.[17] As part of the development package, MouseMiles co-signed Spanish producer and DJ, Sevastian Belo.[18] One year later, members of the group announced via social media they are retiring from music due to ethical reasons and pursuing a career in the business world. Upon their public request and numerous reports, most of their published audio and video content and materials were removed from online and other media sources.

Philanthropy[edit]

As part of his commitment to IB Diploma Programme (DP), Vedad had to undertake 150 hours of unpaid and voluntary work.[19] Some of these projects included working with children with special needs, performing in theater plays for orphans, and raising funds for victims of domestic violence.

He started organizing fundraising campaigns, protesting for human rights of minority groups, and collaborating with other NGOs on providing clothing and shelter to immigrant families traveling through the Balkan region. Local media outlets wrote a praising article about his community service efforts and other work.[20]
