Vega Trails is a chamber-jazz ensemble led by British double bassist and composer Milo Fitzpatrick, a founding member of the group Portico Quartet. The project also features saxophonist Jordan Smart, known for his work with Mammal Hands and Sunda Arc.
Initially conceived as a minimalist duo, Vega Trails debuted with the 2022 album Tremors in the Static[1], recorded in a church using only double bass and saxophone.[2] The album reached 56 in the UK official album downloads chart,[3] and was released on Gondwana Records, a label whose portfolio of artists includes Svaneborg Kardyb and GoGo Penguin.
Their follow-up album, Sierra Tracks (2025), introduces a broader instrumental range, including orchestral strings, cello, vibraphone, and piano.[4]. The project was influenced by Fitzpatrick’s relocation to the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains near Madrid, and features contributions from pianist Taz Modi.[5] The album reached 23 in the UK official album downloads chart.[6]
