Velekkat Sree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy Temple (alternatively Velekkat Chathan Temple) is a Hindu temple located at Palapetty beach in Kazhimbram, Thrissur District, Kerala state, India. The temple is dedicated to the deity Vishnumaya, also known as Kuttichathan.
The temple is considered a significant place of worship for followers of Vishnumaya in the region. The presiding deity is depicted in a fierce form, riding a buffalo and carrying a magical wand (Kuruvadi).[1]
History
The Velekkat temple has a history that is passed down through a family lineage. It is believed to have been established by a magician named Kunjivelu, who initially practiced rituals to appease the deity Kuttichathan. The tradition and the management of the temple were passed on to his son, Bhaskaran, and subsequently to his grandsons, Manoj Kumar and Baburajendraprasad.
According to the temple's history, Baburajendraprasad's sons, Binoy Rajendraprasad and Shinoy Rajendraprasad, continued the family's devotional service to Vishnumaya. After their relocation, the temple was gifted to all family members and is now managed by a committee that oversees its operations and development.[2]
Temple Structure
The temple is designed in the traditional Kerala style of architecture, which is characterized by its intricate woodwork and distinctive roof structures. The temple provides a serene environment for worship.
Rituals
The temple follows ancient customs in its worship, with various poojas (rituals) conducted to seek the blessings of the deity. Devotees visit the temple to make offerings and seek solutions for their problems.
Festivals
Vellattu Maholsavam
The main annual festival of the Velekkat Temple is the "Vellattu Maholsavam". This festival is celebrated on the 19th, 20th, and 21st of the Malayalam month of Makaram (usually in January or February). The festival attracts a large number of devotees from various parts of the region.[3]
