Veloren is an open-source voxel-based RPG written in Rust and licensed under the GPLv3.[1] The game is inspired by Cube World, Minecraft, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Dwarf Fortress among others.[2][3] Veloren offers a unique blend of exploration, combat, crafting, and immersive gameplay.
In contrast to commercial titles, the development of the game as well as the financing of the running costs are done by the community. The Airshipper launcher, through which the game is downloaded and updated, is available for free download for Windows, macOS and Linux.[4] Additionally, the game is available in various Linux package managers, such as the Arch User Repository,[5] Flatpak [6] and Snap.[7] The latest pre-alpha release of the game is 0.14.0 (06 Jan, 2023).[8]
History[edit]
Development on the game began on May 28, 2018.[9] Development progress has been documented weekly in the form of a blog since February 2019.[10] It is currently in pre-alpha.
In an interview,[11] developer Forest Anderson described the original goal of the Veloren project: to fill the void left by Cube World. In the meantime, however, other aspects, such as simulating a dynamic world with political and economic relationships between factions, and improving the user experience, have come into focus.
Gameplay[edit]
Veloren is a role-playing game in which the player assumes the role of an adventurer, who can be adjusted according to the player's preferences. In the character creation menu, you can choose between six different species - Human, Dwarf, Goblin, Orc, Undead and Danari;[3] the last of these being unique to the game. The species' differences are largely aesthetic, with the exception of minor factors such as mass and size; the latter by extension also affects the size of one's hitbox.
You can also choose from six different starter weapons. Unlike in many MMORPGs, there is no class choice; instead, abilities of different weapon classes can be upgraded through separate skill trees, and so it is possible to pick up, use, and learn skills associated with any kind of weapon later on.[3] There is currently one skill tree for each weapon and a general skill tree for broader abilities. Each weapon has a primary basic attack and one or more abilities as a secondary attack.
Veloren can be played in either single-player or online multiplayer; the latter requiring an account on a server. The public server of the Veloren team (server.veloren.net) is preconfigured, though servers can also be self-hosted.
The core gameplay consists of exploring the world, fighting monsters, conquering various dungeons, and going spelunking in caves. Higher-quality equipment may be obtained by looting dungeons or crafting from precious stones or ores, which can be gained by digging in caverns.
According to the default settings, the game world is pre-generated due to the long waiting times during generation. However, the customizable procedural world generator[12] can also be used.
Reception[edit]
GamingOnLinux's Liam Dawe described Veloren in his 2019 article as "a new open source voxel RPG" that "supports Linux too". He also praised the potential he saw, stating that the game "shows a ridiculous amount of promise".[13] He echoed this sentiment in his 2022 article on a new version release of the game, stating that it was "looking more promising than ever";[14] although, in his 2023 article on a later version release, he mentioned that it "still needs some more stuff and things for players to actually experience" [emphasis in the original].[15]
Desde Linux's editor Isaac praised the game for its low system requirements, while noting the large room for improvement. Similar to how Liam Dawe described it, he considered Veloren "one of the most promising open-source video games that currently exists".[16]
In their article on the 0.10 release of Veloren, P. Vader from Jugando En Linux described the game as "beginning to have quite an impact due to its high quality", considering it as having "all the ingredients to become a great video game".[17]
The website MMO Square found the gameplay of Veloren to be compelling and impressive, though criticizing the lack of beginner-friendliness they experienced.[18]
Editor baltolkien of KDE Blog described the visuals of the game as having "sincerely left me with my mouth agape", further praising the technical aspects of the game.[19]
In his review, which gained over 1 million views, YouTuber Zedman, not unlike Desde Linux's Isaac, commended the low hardware requirements of Veloren. He appreciated the large amount of content the game had to offer, taking into account the developmental stage of the game; he also praised the world of the game as "completely alive", detailed the difficulty the game had to offer, and noted the helpfulness of the in-game community. He concluded the review stating that, in his eyes, the game had a bright future, and could have a wide reach.[20]
