Veniamin Alekseevich Demin (13 October 1908 - 11 February 1986) was a Soviet engineer and architect, who took part in creation of Mamayev Kurgan, a memorial complex built to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad

Biography[edit]

Veniamin Demin was born in Ulan-Ude in 13 October 1908, he had 2 sisters. His father was head of railway station and member of Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Veniamin was 16 years old when he lost his parents: firstly died his father and after that his mother passed away, at the same age he went to Moscow. He graduated from Moscow architectural Institute in 1936 and became member of Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Was called up for military service in 1941.

After the war Veniamin lived in workshop of soviet sculptor Soslanbek Tavasiev. Demin died in 11 February 1986 in Moscow. Buried in Khovanskoye Cemetery.

Period of the war[edit]

Veniamin Demin entered the military service in the Soviet army in September 1941, he was a participant in Great Patriotic War. During the war he was a commander of the 140th military construction detachment of the 3rd front-line Department of military construction.

Architect career[edit]

Took part in the construction of the Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd. Worked with Yakov Belopolsky and Fedor Lysov under the direction of the soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich in 1960-1967. Mamayev Kurgan was the most important work in his career and he was awarded with the Lenin Prize in 1970. Also he worked on creating monuments in Volga–Don Canal with his friend and mentor Soslanbek Tavasiev (soviet sculptor, 25 December 1894 - 10 April 1974).
