Vicki Ann Jellie AM is an Australian politician and community campaigner who is currently serving as Mayor and Councillor for the City of Warrnambool. She was elected as a Councillor on 10 November 2020 and sworn into office on 23 November 2020.[1] She was appointed as Mayor for a 12 month term on 23 November 2020, along with Deputy Mayor Richard Ziegeler.[2]

Vicki was named Australia's Local Hero in 2017[3] and appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2018[4], in recognition of her work through Peter's Project to secure improved regional cancer services in south-west Victoria and south-east South Australia.

Background[edit]

Peter's Project[edit]

In 2009, Vicki founded Peter's Project, a community advocacy and fundraising organisation dedicated to improving cancer care and treatment services for people living in the South West / Great South Coast region of Victoria and Limestone Coast region of South Australia.

The group was named in memory of Vicki's late husband and long-time resident of Warrnambool, Peter Jellie, who died from oesophageal cancer in 2008.[5] To access cancer treatment, Peter had to regularly make a 700km round-trip to Melbourne, spending weeks away from friends and family. After his death, Vicki found plans in his briefcase outlining a plan to use his 50th birthday as a fundraiser for improved local cancer services in south-west Victoria.[6] Vicki honoured Peter's plans with a memorial fundraising party in March 2009, raising $27,000 and officially launching the Peter's Project initiative.[7]

The principle aim of Peter's Project was to secure a new cancer care centre in Warrnambool, including radiotherapy services, so that regional south-west Victorian and south-east South Australian cancer patients could receive treatment closer to home. Research commissioned IN 2009 by then local MP Denis Napthine indicated that THIRD OF PEOPLE REFUSED TREATMENT. ALSO, SERVICES WOULD BE VIABLE. {CITATION - BEN'S PARL RESEARCH REPORT}. In YEAR, the organisation officially set a fundraising goal for the $30 million project,

In YEAR, the organisation succesfully reached it's community fundraising goal of $5 million Australian dollars,
