In october 2020, Vikidia sign a agreement with Wikimedia France[2] to promote this encyclopedia in the school environment as an alternative at Wikipedia for educationnal projects with a public of young teenagers or kids, who are too young to contribute at Wikipedia. .

History of French version[edit]

French version of Vikidia was created on 14 November 2006 by Mathias Damour, who contributes at Vikidia under the nickname of Astirmays.[3] The website was opened to the public three days later. His operation was inspired from Wikikids[4]; and then, inspired DicoAdo[5]

The encyclopedia reached the milestone of 1,000 articles in April 2007 (with 100 user accounts), 2,000 in September 2007, 5,000 in September 2008, 10,000 in July 2011, 15,000 in August 2013, and 20,000 in July 2005. In April 2020, Vikidia reached 30,000 articles.[6]

In 2008 Vikidia was mentioned in the book Web et dirigeants (Web and leaders) by Dominique Annet.[7]

Principles[edit]

At the time of its creation, Vikidia could be edited with or without an account. In January 2008, following a talk between contributors, the articles become only editable for users who had an account. But since 9 March 2008, people can again edit the encyclopedia without account, being identified by IP address.

A neutral point of view is required, and the content must to be adapted for children from 8 to 13 years old. The content is published under a Creative Commons licence and GDFL.

Content considered inappropriate for children is often excluded. When the topic is hard to understand, contributors try to simplify it.
