Villainology is a series of mixtapes by American rapper John Anthony, released by Villainous Records. The mixtape is compiled of unreleased songs and remixes throughout the span of a full year.[1] There are five installments of the Villainology Series and they have released on the first Friday of December each year, with the exception of the mixtapes fifth installment.[2]
The Villainology mixtapes release every year in December and feature unreleased songs that were scrapped from earlier albums or EP’s throughout the year. It also features many remix songs in the series. Each mixtape has its own volume and are only available on certain free platforms. The artwork for each mixtape is relatively similar, as it features John Anthony as a cartoon character.[3]
Background[edit]
In 2019, John Anthony released the first mixtape in the series — Villainology, Vol. 1 on December 6. The mixtapes featured seven unreleased songs[4]. Each song was to be considered scrapped songs from John Anthony’s debut album The Therapy LP, which released on October 30, 2019. “A Short Story” and “Break Through” were originally singles scheduled to release after the album came out in October, but were layered scrapped for now-released singles “Pressure” and “Backstab”.[5]
Continuing on the following year, John Anthony released Villainology, Vol. 2 on December 4, 2020. The album featured nine unreleased songs, varying from multiple albums in 2020.[6] Albums such as The Bad Guy Chronicles, Unexplored and The Therapy LP (Deluxe Version) all highlight the scrapped songs from the mixtape. Volume 2 also featured independent singer Constantine in “Pressure II”, which was to be a sequel song to the original song “Pressure” from 2019.
On December 3, 2021, John Anthony released the third installment of the Villainology series. Villainology, Vol. 3 featured thirteen unreleased songs and remixes to other songs. [7]Many of the songs were leaked on YouTube months before the expected release in December. The song “War” features an appearance from rapper Young Buck, from the hip-hop group G-Unit. Songs such as “Halftime” and “Spicy” are remix songs to rapper Nas, while “Life’s On The Line” is a remix to 50 Cent’s song “Life’s on the Line” from the album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (2003). Many of the unreleased songs were scrapped tracks from John Anthony’s album Words Are Weapons, while some were songs from an unreleased album entitled The Ritual, which was originally set for a release in the Fall of 2021 but never materialized.[8]
The fourth installment, Villainology, Vol. 4, came out on December 2, 2022, under Villainous Records. It features seven unreleased tracks, primarily remixes, by John Anthony.[9] This mixtape assembles six remix tracks, including the songs "Indica Badu" by rapper Logic and "Set The Tone", which features Logic's verse, to another 50 Cent remix song — "Don't Push Me". One of the mixtapes only released song, “All Day", is the only original song on this mixtape, specifying from John Anthony’s 2022 album Villaination!. John Anthony also remixes hit singles such as 1995’s “Runnin’” by The Pharcyde, 1999’s “Jumpin’, Jumpin’” by Destiny’s Child, which is explicitly entitled “F**kin’, “F**kin’” and 2020’s “Isis” by Joyner Lucas and Logic.[10]
The latest installment of the mixtape series was Villainology, Vol. 5, which released on December 15, 2023. The mixtape features ten songs, with multiple unreleased songs that vary from John Anthony’s sixth studio album Success Story, which released in early 2023. The mixtape also showcased five remix tracks, tributing classic songs such as Eminem “Cleanin’ Out My Closet”, Jay-Z “Renegade”, which featured J Mont, and 50 Cent “Wanksta”, which is the third remix John Anthony has made from 50 Cent’s album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ on the Villainology mixtapes, compiling remixes to "Don't Push Me" from Villainology, Vol. 4 and "Life's on the Line" from Villainology, Vol. 3. Volume 4 also adds an original cut version for the song "Guillotine", which features rapper Dizzy Wright. This version wasn't added to Success Story due to failed licensing on Wright's verse, which resulted in the song being a solo John Anthony track on Success Story back in March. Villainology, Vol. 5 was originally set to release on December 1, 2023, per annual first Friday of December release, but John Anthony took to Twitter to address the albums delay: "#Villainology Volume 5 is still coming. Usually it would release today but due to the anticipation surrounding the H2V concert next Friday, I decided to put the mixtape on hold. Expect Vol. 5 to drop on a Friday this December."[11], he stated. In the original tweet, John Anthony released the artwork for the mixtape, however, upon official release on the 15th, the cover art was changed.
