The VinaCapital Foundation (VCF) is a USA-registered 501(c)(3) public charitable organization, licensed as a foreign non-governmental organization in Vietnam. Founded in 2006 by Don Lam and Robin King Austin[1], its mission is to improve the lives of Vietnamese children and empower women by providing opportunities for growth and improvement through healthcare and education programs.[2][3][4]

History[edit]

The VinaCapital Foundation was founded in 2006 by Don Lam and Robin King Austin to “change the lives of children in Vietnam” with the focus being “the issues of poor children such as access to healthcare and improving pediatric care”.[1]

In December 2005, Don Lam initiated The VinaCapital Challenge Campaign for Children’s Hearts with a challenge gift of $31,500 from VinaCapital to encourage people to contribute to poor children’s heart surgeries. Don was passionate about the program and began to reach out to the VinaCapital family of investors and portfolio companies to raise funds.[5]

Don knew Robin King Austin, an American who came to Vietnam in 2003 following her husband who was the CEO of a USA company. Robin wanted to help vulnerable children in underserved communities.[1] With their joint dedication, Don and Robin co-founded the VinaCapital Foundation in 2006. Don Lam has served as Chairman of the Board of the foundation since its establishment and Robin remains on the Board of Directors. VinaCapital sponsored the initial funding for the foundation and continues to support administrative costs today.[6] VinaCapital Foundation pledges that “all the money raised from outside sources goes 100% to the heart children”.[1][7]

In 2018, Robin King Austin retired from the CEO position and serves as Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the foundation. The current CEO of the foundation is Rad Kivette.[8]

Activities[edit]

VCF implements activities in three main areas:[4]

  • Grassroots medical programs include the Heartbeat Vietnam program provides free heart surgeries for disadvantaged children and supports pre-and post-operative care; the Rural Outreach Clinic program brings free health examinations to children in remote areas; the Care to Rise program supports Covid-19 orphans and underserved children affected by the Covid-19 pandemic; and the Grassroot Assistance program.[9]
  • Healthcare capacity building programs include the Survive to Thrive program provides training and equipment for emergency and neonatal care in rural hospitals; the Clean Water installs filtration systems to provide potable water for underserved communities; and the National emergency program provides disaster and pandemic relief.[9]
  • Education programs support ethnic minority female students with scholarships and organize Brighter Path Girls’ Clubs for high school ethnic minority girls to teach about sexual and reproductive health, leadership skills, financial literacy, and legal rights.[4][9]
