Vinuson Ryan Suntharesan (born June 4, 2004), known professionally as Vinnin, is a Malayali-Tamil Canadian singer, rapper, and songwriter.[1][2] He is known most for being a young phenomenon in the South Asian community motivating others with his Hip-Hop tracks.[3]

Vinnin began his career by releasing his debut single Losing My Mind in 2021 through his independent label Winnin Records[4], where Vinnin is the lead founder. His music grew in popularity due to his single Top Of The Game being added to the NBA2K21 Next-Gen Soundtrack. His song Way Back was first aired on Pritt's radio show on the BBC Asian Network.[5]

His fourth single Pain With The Game was released in July of 2022. On November 9, 2022, Vinnin and Yanchan released their first collaborative song See Me Now. This song has gained multiple streams from various countries and brought Vinnin to the forefront of the South Asian music market. Vinnin's music has been featured on The Toronto Star, The Scarborough Mirror, and BSE Malayalam TV (Canada).[1][3]

Early life[edit]

Vinuson Ryan Suntharesan was born in Scarborough, Ontario on June 4, 2004, the son of Malayali and Tamil immigrants. Vinnin's parents fled their home countries, Sri Lanka and India refugees from the civil war.[6] They made their way to Canada, specifically Scarborough, where Suntharesan grew up. He attended North Agincourt Junior Public School then Sir Alexander Mackenzie Senior Public School then later Agincourt Collegiate Institute, also in the Scarborough area.

At the age of ten, Suntharesan enrolled in youth basketball mentorship programs which led him to have a passion for Basketball. He continued to learn and playing basketball obsessively. At the age of 16, he attended Kevin Wilson's National Basketball Youth Mentorship Program.[5][7]

Career[edit]

2020: Early Beginnings[edit]

In November 2020, Suntharesan released his first single, Losing My Mind. Suntharesan as an artist, was testing waters, trying to find his sound. With having zero experience with music and the industry it was a whole process that he had to spend time on. Vinnin's debut single, released by his label Winnin Records had music video directed by Mozzrr published on YouTube and Instagram.[8] Vinnin later released his anthem, "Top Of The Game," his first studio-produced single which was added to the NBA 2K21 video game soundtrack. In this anthem, he motivates others with the upbeat-instrumental in the song and tells the story about his love for basketball and for his love for music.[9][10] This single granted him a feature in The Toronto Star and The Scarborough Mirror.[2] Suntharesan wanted to know more about the industry and discovered Yanchan and Shan Vincent De Paul when his dad showed him one of their Mrithangam Rap Episodes on YouTube that was sent in a WhatsApp group chat, and it became his goal to connect with him.[11]

2021–present : Yearly releases and See Me Now[edit]

In 2021, Suntharesan released his singles "Way Back" in November and "Kulir Heart" in December.

Releasing singles, Suntharesan's main goal was to find his sound that was unique to only him. "Way Back" talks about how we must we must sometimes let go of people in our lives. We must retaliate against the superficial and toxic people in our lives. Vinnin said, " It is essentially a song I wrote to all the people who tried keeping me down in high school, a message to them and the world that I will keep pursuing whatever that makes me happy," hence the name Way Back as the title.[2] "Kulir Heart" being his first Tamil/English mashup, talks about the emotions being cold-hearted from all the fake vibes in female energy and friends.

On July 20, 2022, Suntharesan released his single "Pain With The Game." He adds on to his previous release "Way Back" and talks about his backlash and hate received by various individuals. The experiences that he went through were shared through this song and during Pie Radio's Mango Masala show he mentions, "The events that I had went through ruined my mental health, I don't know why people really be hating and treat me the worst out of anyone, my high school years and pandemic was really traumatizing.[12][13]

After connecting with Yanchan, on November 9, 2022, Vinnin released his collaborative song named, "See Me Now." Yanchan, being known for the blending of genres and styles such as Carnatic music, songs from Tamil and Hindi Cinema, shows his talents on this song, proven by the instruments used in the instrumental of this song. "See Me Now" talks about prospering and pushing through the tough times ("ups and downs") that people go through.
