Viola M. Woods

Viola M. Woods (born November 7, 1949) is an American artist, and Instructor of Art. She is known for her sculptural works in clay.[1]

Early life[edit]

Woods was born in Nashville, Tennessee. Her mother, Margaret Christine wood, was a social worker, and her father, Rainey Charles Wood, was a businessman.[1]

Education and career[edit]

Woods received her education from Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, Independent Study, 1978; Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, M.F.A., 1974; Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, M.A., 1973; Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee, B.A., 1971; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., Museum Exhibition Technology, 1969.[1]

Woods works primarily in ceramic clay sculpture, creating artworks "influenced by African Pottery and Sculpture, Native American and Oceanic Art," such as her sculpture "Festival Form" (1975, ceramic, 12" x 8" x 4").[1] She has worked as an Instructor of Art at the Tennessee State University starting in 1976.[1]

She has received the awards and honors of Purchase Award, Afro-American Arts & Crafts Annual Exhibition, Bishop College, Dallas, Texas, 1978; Faculty Assistant, Northern Illinois University, 1974; Award and Honorable Mention, Northern Illinois Student Exhibition, 1973; Apprentice Program, Exhibition Technology, Smithsonian Institution, 1969.[1]
