The Virginia City Freight Depot is a historic railroad freight depot that served the Virginia and Truckee Railroad from 1876 until the V&T stopped serving Virginia City in 1938. After stopping service to Virginia City the V&T abandoned the building. The depot is located on E street, on a particularly flat tract of land that runs from Mill Street in the north to Union Street in the south. Just south of the depot lies the site of the 2nd Virginia City passenger depot[4], which is no longer in existence, but in its stead is the Comstock History Center[5]. The history center contains an engine house that currently houses former V&T Locomotive Number 27 which pulled the final train in the original V&T's existence on May 31, 1950. The Dayton locomotive was housed in the Comstock History Center from 2005 until 2018 until it was traded with Number 27. The modern reconstructed V&T is in operation just a few blocks to the south at the original Virginia City passenger depot, where trains are run down to Gold Hill[6] and down to Eastgate, just to the east of Carson City[7] up in the hills.
