The Virginia Native Plant Society (VNPS) is a Virginia environmental non-profit 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Boyce, Virginia.[1][2][3]

History and mission[edit]

The organization was founded in 1982 as the Virginia Wildflower Preservation Society by Mary Painter and Mary Pockman.[4] In 1988 the organization name was changed to the Virginia Native Plant Society.[3][5]

The Society's mission is to protect and preserve the native plants of Virginia and their habitats, in order to sustain for generations to come the integrity of the Commonwealth’s rich natural heritage of ecosystems and biodiversity for purposes of enjoyment, enlightenment, sustainable use, and our own very survival. VNPS advocates and follows practices that will conserve the natural endowment, and discourages and combats practices that will endanger or destroy it.[6][7]

Programs and activities[edit]

VNPS supports a variety of programs and activities, including:

  • The Wildflower of the Year spotlights a Virginia native plant and its habitat with a colorful and informative brochure.[8]
  • The Native Plant Site Registry of natural ecosystems recognizes natural areas in Virginia that contain exemplary plant communities.[9][10]
  • The Research Grant Program awards funds for well-defined projects whose results can be evaluated and which address the VNPS Mission and Goals.[11][12][13]
  • Raising funds for rare native plant and natural community conservation and preservation including Virginia’s Natural Area Preserve System.[14][15][16]
  • A Spring Workshop and Annual Meeting & Conference offer speakers, presentations, field trips and educational opportunities.
  • Member chapters in 11 regions of the state promote the VNPS mission and goals through activities at the local level.[17]

Volunteers carry out the work of the Society with the support of membership dues and contributions. VNPS cooperates in state and chapter programs with government agencies, developers, horticulturists and other conservation groups that share our interests.[18][19][20][21][22] Members occasionally receive legislative alerts and are encouraged to communicate with their elected representatives.
