Vlandas
Tim Vlandas is Course Director of comparative social policy at Department of Social Policy and Intervention[1], University of Oxford. He is also a Governing Body Fellow of St Antony's College, also at the University of Oxford[2], where he is based at the European Studies Centre [3], together with Timothy Garton Ash[4] and Kalypso Nicolaidis[5]. He teaches in the areas of comparative social policy, economics of social policy, and comparative research design.
Vlandas has research interests in comparative welfare states and political economy, the welfare state, and labour market policy.[6][7]. His research has been published in Comparative Political Studies[8] (currently ranked 5th in political science by Google Scholar[9]), the Socio-Economic Review[10] (currently ranked 18th in sociology by Google Scholar[11]), Political Science Research and Methods [12], the Journal of Common Market Studies[13] (currently ranked 6th in political science by Google Scholar [14]), the Journal of European Social Policy[15], Politics & Society[16], the European Journal of Industrial Relations[17], Comparative European Politics [18], French Politics[19], Basic Income Studies[20], Nations & Nationalism[21], the Review of European Economic Policy [22], European Political Science [23], and the Routledge Handbook of Euroscepticism[24].
His work has been widely cited by international organisations, for instance the European Commission, the World Bank [25], the OECD [26], the ILO [27], the National Bank of Poland [28], the European Parliament [29], and the United Nations[30]. In addition, his research is also referenced in a wide range of media outlets and think tanks, for instance, CNN[31], TechWire [32], Thinkprogress[33], The Conversation [34], The Huffington Post[35], the Swedish financial site Di [36], the Finnish Peruste newspaper[37], the Swedish Arbetet newspaper [38], the Crisis Observatory[39], and the World Bank blog[40]. He also regularly gives talks and training to the trade union movement, for instance the European Trade Union Confederation [41] and the International Trade Union Confederation[42]. Vlandas is one of the standing group convenors of the Changing Political Economies and Welfare States section at the European Consortium of Political Research[43] and he is serving on the Best Article in European Politics & Society Award Committee of the American Political Science Association [44]. He is also the chair of the European Political project at the European Studies Centre [45]. He recently gave the plenary session at the 2019 conference of the International Public Policy Association [46] and he was a keynote speaker at the 2019 conference of the Italian European Social Policy Network Association [47][48]
Awards
Vlandas was awarded a Doctoral Researcher Prize awarded by the Network for European Social Policy Analysis in 2013[49]. He received a Best Paper Award from the American Political Science Association for his research on far-right party support and labour market institutions (2016).[50] While at the University of Reading, he also received the 2018 University of Reading Prosperity and Resilience Output Prize [51] for his article "Grey Power and the Economy", which was published in Comparative Political Studies [52]. Most recently he was awarded a grant by the Economic, Social, Cultural & Environmental Impacts of COVID-19: Urgent Response Fund, funded by the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) and the Oxford ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) to create a Covid-19 supertracker [53][54]
