Voelkel GmbH

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Hello,

I think the topic is notable, even according to the rules of en.wikipedia.org.

Voelkel is a well-known manufacturer of organically produced beverages. The awareness is given especially in Germany. In addition, the company has a high market share in certain beverage types.

There is ongoing media report about the company. These media include, among others

I have now tried to take into account the advice of NCOPR and PROMO. This meant in particular:

  • Reduction of the article, especially in the section on history and in the section on social commitment
  • Expulsion of sources that are too close to the company
  • Avoid repetition

For one time, I left a company-related source in the draft. The memoirs of the founder show that during the Second World War forced laborers were employed (3 persons). Many companies in Germany avoid talking about that matter. It is not the case here. There is no reference to forced labor outside the source mentioned. That's why I left in the draft.

Voelkel GmbH is a fruit pressing plant based in Höhbeck which produces fruit juices, vegetable juices, soft drinks, wellness drinks and other beverages in both Demeter and organic quality for German and international natural food stores, Reformhaus shops and the catering trade. The company produces more than 200 different types of beverages which include sodas and smoothies, as well as mulled wines and punches for winter.[4]

History[edit]

Founding and development until 1980[edit]

In the years following World War I, Karl Voelkel and Margret Voelkel belonged to a group of people who worked in a cooperative/community organisation near Pevestorf in Wendland. The couple was influenced by the Wandervogel movement and Rudolf Steiner’s ideas on biodynamic agriculture.[5][6][7]

In 1936, the couple founded a mobile juice press company. They travelled to the surrounding villages and made must with the help of a mobile press using the fruit of the rural inhabitants.[8] Shortly thereafter the couple turned a dairy in Pevestorf next to Höhbeck into a stationary cider mill.[9] During World War II, the Voelkel’s employed three prisoners of war.[10]

One of the founders' sons took over the management of the company in the post-war years and, together with his wife, formed the second generation which expanded the company.[9]

Since 1980[edit]

In 1980, Stefan Voelkel, grandson of Karl and Margret Voelkel, took over the company. He expanded the business and made Voelkel a brand.[3] International business grew and the company delivered its goods to almost 30 countries in 2010.[11]

In order to preserve the company’s capital and to ensure that production was ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable in the long term, Stefan Voelkel and his sister Christiane used their shares to set up two foundations. The adult sons of Stefan Voelkel agreed to this process.[12][6][13][14][7][15][16]

Elbtalaue Naturkostprodukte GmbH was established in 2013.[17] This company targets conventional food retailers. It is owned by two other foundations.[18]

2017 the company created a platform for the marketing of organic products which is aimed at startups and food retailers.[19][20]

Present day[edit]

Company facts and figures[edit]

The company produces around 200[21] fruit juices, fruit juice variations, vegetable juices and soft drinks. They have about 1000 items on the market as a result of own brands, private labels and labels for export.[20] The company brings out around 15[8] new products every year.

The company has a total market share of 35 percent in the German organic food retailer market with its beverages, and around 70 percent with vegetable juices. Company products can be found in 95 percent of all German organic stores. France, Italy and Denmark are important export countries for the company. 20 percent of Voelkel’s brand revenue is generated abroad.[22][21][23]

Total sales in 2016 amounted to € 61.1 million.[2] In April 2019 250 people were employed by the company.[3] Management tasks are shared by Stefan Voelkel, Jacob Voelkel (since Summer 2017)[24] Boris Voelkel, Jurek Voelkel and Christian Harder (all since spring 2019).[1]

Foundations as owners[edit]

Since 2011, the company is 90 percent owned by the Voelkel Stiftung.[12][15] The charitable foundation Verantwortung für Mensch und Natur (Responsibility for Man and Nature) holds 10 percent of the company’s shares. It supports ecological and social projects with its income. The trustees of the foundations are brothers Boris, Jacob, David and Jurek Voelkel. Their father Stefan is the director of the foundation.[25]

Social commitment[edit]

The company also supports resistance to the planned nuclear waste repository and is against transportation of nuclear waste (castor transports) to Gorleben.[26][27][28][6] The company also participates in environmental campaigns like Ackergifte? Nein danke! (Field toxins? No thanks!).[29] Seed research is supported as well.[30][31][32]

On a local level it also promotes education (supports the Lüchow-Dannenberg music school),[33][34] youth work,[35] and sport.[36] Internationally, the company supports, for example, the children’s relief organisation Plan International[37] and missio.[38]
