Founded in 1936, Voelkel GmbH is a fruit pressing plant based in Höhbeck which produces fruit juices, vegetable juices, soft drinks, wellness drinks and other beverages in both Demeter and organic quality for German and international natural food stores, Reformhaus shops and the catering trade.

History

Development up until the 1980s

In the years following World War I, Karl Voelkel (1889–1966)[3] and Margret Voelkel (1896–1982)[4] belonged to a group of people who worked in a cooperative/community organisation to farm the land and orchards on a hill near Pevestorf in Wendland.[5] In the 1920s, the couple were influenced by the Wandervogel movement which stood for Rudolf Steiner’s ideas on biodynamic agriculture.[6]

In 1936, the couple founded a mobile juice press company. They travelled to the surrounding villages and made must with the help of a mobile press using the fruit of the rural inhabitants.[7] Later, Karl Voelkel bought cider apples from Württemberg, which were processed into commercial must. The demand for mobile and commercial must increased rapidly; so much so that the couple rented the dairy in Pevestorf next to Höhbeck and turned it into a stationary cider mill. The focus of the company was subsequently on the production of commercial must.[8] During World War II, the Voelkel’s employed women from the area and later prisoners of war: a Frenchman and a couple from the Soviet Union.[9] In the spring of 1945, the cider mill suffered damage which was quickly dealt with after the war.[10]

The founders lost two of their three sons during the war.[11] Only Harm Voelkel survived.[12] He took over the management of the company in the post-war years and, together with his wife Giesela, formed the second generation which expanded the company.[2] In 1950, the company joined the growing association Demeter. Ten years later, the production of vegetable juices began. The export business began in 1970 with deliveries to the Netherlands.[13]

The company led by Stefan Voelkel

In 1980, Stefan Voelkel, the son of Harm and Giesela Voelkel, took over the company. He expanded the product range and increased production. Their own mineral water source went into operation in 1999 and this was followed by a move from the former dairy into new production halls a year later.[13] International business grew and the company delivered its goods to almost 30 countries in 2010.[14]

The setting up of foundations and subsequent years

In order to preserve the company’s capital and to ensure that production was ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable in the long term, Stefan Voelkel and his sister Christiane used their shares to set up two foundations. The adult sons of Stefan Voelkel agreed to this process.[15][6][16][17][18][19][20]

Elbtalaue Naturkostprodukte GmbH was established in 2013.[21] This company targets conventional food retailers. It is owned by two other foundations.[22]

In 2016, the company expanded its production line and built a new production hall.[23] A year later, it created a platform for the marketing of organic products which is aimed at startups and food retailers.[24][25]

Present Day

Company facts and figures

The company produces around 200[26] to 220[2] fruit juices, fruit juice variations, vegetable juices and soft drinks. They have about 1000 items on the market as a result of own brands, private labels and labels for export.[25] The company brings out 15[27] to 20 new products[18] every year.

The company has a total market share of 35 percent in the German organic food retailer market with its beverages, and around 70 percent with vegetable juices. Company products can be found in 95 percent of all German organic stores. France, Italy and Denmark are important export countries for the company. 20 percent of Voelkel’s brand revenue is generated abroad.[28][26][29]

Total sales in 2016 amounted to € 61.1 million.[1] In 2017, around 200 people were employed by the company.[2] Management tasks are shared by Stefan Voelkel and Jacob Voelkel (since Summer 2017).[30]

Foundations

Since 2011, the company is 90 percent owned by the Voelkel Stiftung. The foundation’s structure should prevent takeovers by third parties, as well as financial burdens by children entitled to inheritances. Instead, capital should be maintained and increased over the long term. The aim of the foundation is the sustainable production of juices, if possible from biodynamically produced natural products. Sustainability is understood in the ecological, economic, and social sense.[15][17][6][16][19] The charitable foundation Verantwortung für Mensch und Natur (Responsibility for Man and Nature) holds 10 percent of the company’s shares. It supports ecological and social projects with its income. The trustees of the foundations are brothers Boris, Jacob, David and Jurek Voelkel. Their father Stefan is the director of the foundation.[31]

Social commitment

In 2001, the company and Stefan Voelkel were among the founders of the Lüneburger Streuobstwiesen-Verein (Lüneburg Orchard Association).[32][33] The company also supports resistance to the planned nuclear waste repository and is against transportation of nuclear waste (castor transports) to Gorleben.[34][35][36][6] The company also participates in the Ackergifte? Nein danke! (Field toxins? No thanks!) campaign.[37] It also promotes education (supports the Lüchow-Dannenberg music school),[38][39] youth work,[40] and sport.[41] Seed research is also supported.[42][43][44]

Internationally, the company supports, for example, the children’s relief organisation Plan International, which, among other things, helps the prevention of AIDS in Uganda;[45] missio also receives donations for international refugee work.[46]

Other

In 2016, the company organised a crowdfunding/crowdlending campaign. 200 lenders were won.[47][48][49]

The company stopped sponsoring the Echo Music Prize in 2018. The awarding of the Echo Pop to Kollegah and Farid Bang in the Hip-Hop/Urban National category was criticised by the company as being an acknowledgement of shameful Holocaust comparisons.[50]
