Vyzov (Russian: Вызов, lit. 'Challenge')[lower-alpha 1] is an upcoming Russian science fiction film by director Klim Shipenko. It will be the first feature film partially made in space.[2]

Synopsis[edit]

Cosmonaut Ivanov loses consciousness during the flight and because of this the doctors decide that it will be necessary to operate on his heart in microgravity. The heart surgeon Zhenya, who doesn't even have time to raise her teenage daughter, prepares to fly.[2]

Starring[edit]

Origin[edit]

The idea came about after "political forces" prevented Tom Cruise from making his film with Roscosmos.[3] There were about three thousand applications for the main role, which was reduced to 20/30, and then they decided in favor of Peresild.[2] The drama is a joint project of Roscosmos, Channel One Russia and the studio Yellow, Black and White [ru].[4][5]

To prepare for the shoot, Klim Shipenko trained hard and lost 15 kilos. He will work as a cameraman, makeup artist and art director on the flight.[2] Oleg Novitsky and Peter Dubrov will appear in the film,[6] with Dubrov and Mark Vande Hei assisting in the production.[7] Anton Shkaplerov will be the commander of the Soyuz MS-19, with Shipenko and Peresild flying as flight engineers. The backups are cosmonaut Oleg Artemiev, cameraman Alexei Dudin, and actress Alena Mordovina.[8] Due to the rearrangement of seats to make it possible for project participants to fly, Mark Vande Hei will have to stay at the station for 353 days.[9]

The footage shot in the space is expected to total about 35 minutes of the final product.[2][6] According to Konstantin Ernst, the motivation of the producers is to confirm Russia's leadership in the space industry and to restore the prestige of the cosmonaut profession in the eyes of the younger generation (Yulia Peresild did not dream of flying into space as a child).[2] The unique experience gained in preparing non-professionals for space flight could be useful should it become necessary to send scientists or doctors into space.[8] The film is to be the first narrative feature film shot in space, and second narrative film to do so, after the short film Apogee of Fear, shot in 2008 on the International Space Station. The film is in competition with a Doug Liman and Tom Cruise feature film to be the first such shot in space.[10]

The Soyuz will be launched on October 5 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The development of the project will be covered by the Evening Urgant program, which will be attended by the crew members about a week before the launch.[2] As of September 12th, 2021, Channel One started to air the program "Vyzov. Pervye v kosmose" - about what was involved in the selection of the participants.[8][11]

Reactions to the project[edit]

The film, which according to Dmitry Rogozin, head of Roscosmos, is an "experiment to see if Roscosmos can prepare two ordinary people to fly in about 3 or 4 months" has received opposition from the scientific and aerospace communities, such as the fact they removed trained cosmonauts from their flights may be a "misuse of public money"[12] or even that "using the station's resources for non-scientific purposes would be illegal".[13] Sergei Krikalev, director of manned programs at Roscosmos, reportedly lost his position by speaking out against the project,[14] but was reinstalled after a few days following protests from cosmonauts on and off active duty.[15]
