W is a British public relations consultancy, founded by Warren Johnson in 2009. Its headquarters are located in London, with other offices in Singapore and Amsterdam.


History[edit]

Founded in 2009 by Warren Johnson, W Communications has grown from a starting employee base of 2, to become the 46th largest public relations firm in the UK, with a revenue of £6.6 million in 2017.[1] Current clients include Unilever, adidas, London Evening Standard, Spotify, Levi’s, CALM and MoneySuperMarket.

In August 2015, W Communications expanded to Asia, and launched W Asia in Singapore. W Asia was launched with the intention of helping European and US businesses establish their brands in the South East Asian market.[2]

In September 2016, one year after opening an office in Singapore, W Communications opened a full-service office in Amsterdam.[3]

In October 2016, W Communications acquired House PR, an agency best known for its work with clients in the entertainment and hospitality sectors, including David and Victoria Beckham and Entertainment properties T4 and Big Brother.[4]

In March 2017, W Communications acquired Glue PR, a public relations agency located in Newcastle.[5] Glue PR has since been rebranded to W North.

In December 2017, W Communications and Warren Johnson acquired a minority stake in specialist luxury communications firm Facets PR.[6]

In October 2018, W Communications acquired a majority stake in specialist travel communications firm Lotus PR.[7]

Divisions[edit]

As well as the consumer and brand division (named W), W Communications has expanded its offering to service other sectors.

In July 2016 W Communications launched W Influencer, a division which focuses on influencer marketing. Starting clients included Levi’s, Lynx and the Pig Luxury Group.[8]

In July 2017 W Communications launched W Enterprise, a division which focuses on media, tech, corporate and B2B clients. Starting clients included London Evening Standard, WeWork, Trouva, Shortlist Media and the i newspaper.[9]

Notable work[edit]

In 2010, W Communications launched the i Newspaper, a paper which shared the same editorial staff as The Independent and aimed to attract readers that had stopped reading traditional newspapers.[10]

In 2012, W Communications was appointed by Hotel W London to run its communications.[11]

In October 2017, W Communications and Lynx launched ‘Forget About Labels’ a TV and Cinema advertising campaign which championed male confidence and individuality. The work came off the back of W’s content led campaign for Lynx which explored the definition of masculinity, titled ‘The New Masculinity’. The campaign won a PR Week award for Best use of Planning, Strategy and Evaluation in 2017.[12]

To mark World Mental Health Day 2017, W Communications worked with CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) to launch a new bottled water product, infused with tears from Chris Hughes – a Love Island contestant. Later the product was revealed to be a fake, with the campaign conveying the message ‘Don’t bottle it up’, encouraging men to talk more openly about their feelings.[13]

In collaboration with charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) and ad agencies Adam & Eve and DDB, W Communications placed 84 statues on the room of ITV Studios in London to raise awareness for the 84 men who take their life every week in the UK. The campaign secured over 200,000 signatures demanding more government investment in mental health and questions raised in Prime Minister’s Questions quoting the statistics.[14]

In June 2018, W Communications worked with energy drink supplier Carabao and photography project This Fan Girl, to change the perception of female football fans during the World Cup. Ahead of the 2018 World Cup, W and This Fan Girl shot images of real female fans with the aim of getting them to the top of online search engine results.[15]

Notable awards[edit]

In 2015 W Communications was named Mid-Sized consultancy of the year at the PR Week Awards.[16]

In 2017, W Communications won two PR Week Awards, including Best Healthcare – Ethical and OTC Consumer campaign and Best Use of Planning, Strategy and Evaluation.[17]

In 2018, W Communications won three PR Week Awards, including Best Financial Services Campaign, Most Innovative Use of Social Media and Best Not for Profit Campaign.[18] W also won a Cannes Lion award for its work with CALM.[19]
