Manga[edit]

In August 2015, Kaitei Shujin released her first adaptation as a manga online via Gene Pixiv, before being later published as a paperback by Kadokawa Shoten, labels as an "all-ages adventure".[2] In 2017, it was announced that Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea was licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment for the English-speaking market. The complete manga was released in a single volume in July 2017.[5][6] Once the first two volumes of the manga was completed, Kadokawa Shoten did not print or translate the third and final volume of the manga, also known as Sea of Death Arc (Japanese: 死の海編, Hepburn: Shi no umi-hen), which depicts the second half of the game. The Japanese version of the third volume can currently be read on Pixiv.net for free as well as unofficial English fan translations have been created for it. It was released on August 20, 2021.[7]

Developments[edit]

After the completion of her second game The Grey Garden, Deep-Sea Prisoner has said that she was working on a game with a fairytale-like atmosphere.[8] The game was programmed using RPG Maker 2000 for Windows systems, she came up with the original title of the game, Oounabara to Wadanohara, after having decided on the main story beats instead of primarily a role-playing game genre.[9]

Initially, she wanted to add more violent elements to the whole game, but refuse to do so, and later proceeds to the second half.[10]

Reboot[edit]

In February 2020, it was re-released as "Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea -Reboot-", only in Japanese version in the same game engine, which features new animations and characters as well as more story dialogues and less battle elements.[11]
