WalkTracker is a mobile Android app designed for hike tracking and navigation, currently with more than 10,000 downloads and a 3.5 stars (n = 132) review score.[1]

    Features[edit]

The app consists of two main functionalities: Recording and Following a track.

    Tracking[edit]

The app is able to record a walked/hiked track. It will store the locations as GPS coordinates. For elevation data, an external database (SRTM 250m dataset) is used to lookup the elevation for each location. [2] Afterwards the data can be 'exported' using the share function in Android. The data will be exported as GPX file and as an image of the track, projected on a map.

    Following / Navigating[edit]

Besides of that the app can also help the user by navigating a pre recorded GPX track. User can select to follow a track which is in the app already or to import a GPX file. In the app the user will see turn-by-turn navigation instructions and a compass.

    Characteristics[edit]

    Maps[edit]

OpenStreetMap is used as source for the maps. There are two operation modes: online and offline. In the online mode, data will be retrieved live from the Internet. In the offline mode, the user has to download the data for a specific region. For reverse geocoding, this is finding town, city, country names for a location (GPS-coordinates), OpenStreetMap - Nominatim is used.[3]

    WalkTracker Wiki[edit]

After recording a hike/walk, it is possible to share the recorded track with a maximum of three accompanying pictures and description at a dedicated web site with a wiki nature. Everything uploaded there is public domain. Free to view and download for everybody visiting the site. [4]

    Pricing[edit]

The app and offline maps are free to download/use. On the other hand there is indeed an ad banner visible in the app.

    Cons[edit]

    • There is an Android version only
    • There is no paid / ads free version
