Christian Mejlænder Krogsvold, known professionally as Waterflame, is a Norwegian dance electronic music composer. Waterflame started composing in 2002 and joined the site Newgrounds in 2003. His first Newgrounds audio upload, "sunrise", was a short ambient loop track, which Waterflame produced under the nickname Chainsaw_09. Waterflame has released six non-commissioned albums: Green (2009), Adventure (2012), Showdown (2013), Community Favorites (2015), Surge (2017), and Vast (2021). His songs have been featured in several video games, such as Geometry Dash, Castle Crashers, CastleStorm, and Layerz.

Early life[edit]

Krogsvold was born on February 26, 1989, in Oslo, Norway. His song "Field of Memories".[1] is inspired by a song his mother sung to him at bedtime, and he says it is a tribute to his childhood. Waterflame has often kept quiet about his early life, so there has not been much info about it.

Career[edit]

2003 - 2008[edit]

Waterflame joined the site Newgrounds on April 4, 2003. He was one of the first audio creators to gain a substantial fan base on Newgrounds, owing to the fact that the first audio on Newgrounds, "Chilled 1" by Recoil, had been posted not long before Waterflame joined, just under 2 months before, on February 13 of that same year. He released his first audio, "sunrise", a little after he joined Newgrounds. It was an ambient loop track under the moniker Chainsaw_09. He would not become Waterflame until 2006's "Space Pirates",[2] which would also become his first big hit. It gained him substantial recognition from the community, and would mark the beginning of his fame. Later, he would release the track "Glorious Morning"[3] on August 11, 2007, which gained him massive fame. It would be added in several video games, including CastleStorm and Age of War (a Flash game). Later, on August 29, 2008, he would release "Jumper".[4] This would be his biggest hit yet, and sail into tons of games, including Geometry Dash, MecaPumble (However, this was with jump stomp loop, an earlier version of Jumper), and Castle Crashers. He would later announce his first non-commissioned album, Green.

2009-2011[edit]

Waterflame released Green[5] on September 19, 2009. It featured "Space Pirates", as well as other successful songs such as "Ricochet Love",[6] "Rocket Race",[7] and "Outrun".[8] His next big hit was "Time Machine",[9] released on November 27, 2009. It became a huge hit, and has amassed 7.8 million views on YouTube as of November 2021.

On March 7, 2010, Waterflame released the minor hit song "Chaotic".[10]

On December 29, 2010, Waterflame released the orchestral hit "Village Up North".[11]

In 2011, Waterflame was growing and growing as an artist. On January 6, Waterflame released the song "DeludeBeats".[12] On July 14, he released "Killstealer".[13] July 26th brought up "Clouds"[14], a remix of Waterflame's old 2008 song "8-bit Clouds". On September 16th, he released "Super Swing-Bit Orchestra"[15]. On October 5th, Waterflame released "Cats!".[16] On December 27th, he released "Western Adventures"[17] as his final song of 2011.

2012-2014[edit]

Waterflame announced his second album was near, and it's title was Adventure, with a set release date of May 14th. His first upload of 2012, "Make A Run For It!"[18] He released "Blast Processing", on February 7th, however it was taken down due to copyright issues with SEGA. Later, Waterflame would open up about this, and later disclose the situation by putting in the YouTube description, "This is not a SEGA product in any way. All rights reserved to SEGA for the commercial clips.". Later, on October 17th, Waterflame would re-release the song on Newgrounds, as "BlastProcess", due to the fact that he couldn't use the same title as it had been taken off with that title. On March 8th, he released "Run!"[19]. On March 20th, Waterflame released "Neon City Beat"[20] Later, on April 4th, his 9th anniversary of being on Newgrounds, he released "Electroman Adventures"[21], and it became a major hit. It is his second most-viewed song on YouTube to date, with 9.7 million views as of November 2021. On June 27th, Waterflame released "Swing-Bit Brawl"[22], an energetic happy tune that follows the style of "Super Swing-Bit Orchestra". In August, Waterflame entered the Newgrounds Audio DeathMatch (NGADM) 2012. His round one entry was "Rupture"[23], released on August 14th. He released his round two entry, "Conclusion"[24], on August 25th. He then released his next entry for round three, "SuperWing Heroes"[25], on September 13th. His biggest hit to date and his round four entry, "Clutterfunk"[26], was released on October 4th. It is his most-viewed song to date on YouTube, amassing 12.5 million views as of November 2021. His round 5 and final entry, "The Wanderer"[27], was released on October 24th, and placed 2nd overall among the entries. Waterflame said he was "happy to finish 2nd among 162 musicians".
