Weakend Productions was a British computer animation and visual effects company based in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 2002 by Nick Forshaw. The company produced CGI shorts, visual effects for movies, motion graphics and commercials. The first feature was Memorabilia.

The company shut down in 2011.[according to whom?]

The Jeb movies where one of the company's most popular features, including Thog (2004) and A Penguin in a Car (2003).

History[edit]

In 2002, Nick produced his first CGI animation, Memorabilia, based on a true story. It was made for the Depict! festival. The short was nominated for an award, received a TV screening, toured in the US as part of a contingent of British films and used as a part of the BBC's VE celebrations.[1]

In 2003, Nick produced more shorts, including Morning Sickness, Drive Time and Welcome to North Uppolshyte.

In 2004, Nick produced Thog, an unfinished project.

In the same year, the company started producing visual effects for movies; they produced a sequence for Captain Eager and the Mark of Voth.[2] They did a contribution to Massato Reisser's short film 'SWAT' for his festival circuit. They also did VFX to the 2004 short The Noisy Neighbour.[3]

The company made VFX sequences to the failed movie 'Spoooked' also known as 'Mostly Ghostly' by Sterling Pictures. Nick went in as visual effects supervisor on the HD test shoot in 2005.[4]

In 2005, Nick invented a popular character, Jeb. He debuted in the short 'Jeb's Jobs 1' for the BBC competition New Animator. The short was liked by the students at the South Axholme Academy.[5] He also created 'Things Not to Do During the Movie' bumpers who aired as Cobra's movie sponsorship during ad breaks on ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4.[6] The bumpers were also nominated twice for a gong at the Cobravision Awards.[7] After requests for Jeb ringtones, the company decided to put Jeb ringtones and movies on mobile.[8] They also prepared t-shirt designs to download to take to purveyors and online.[9] They also designed a Jeb mug based on the episode 'Technical Support'. They asked for little contributions to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity to continue producing Jeb's Jobs.[10] The company also made a parody of Crazy Frog, Crazy Jeb. Jeb was also featured in the company's showreel, singing Mr. Soft by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel.[11] In the same year, they produced the second episode of Jeb's Jobs, Kids TV.[12] In 2006, Nick signed a deal with AT New Media, a intellectual property licensing company over his Crazy Frog parody.[7] Nick created a Myspace account called jebsweb.[13][7] In the same year, they produced 'Jebadonna', Jeb's parody of Madonna.[14] In the same year, Jeb was featured on Touchpaper PLC.[15] The company made VFX sequences also to Vampire Diary.[16] They even began producing a new series, 'Jeb's Hobbies' with the first episode, Skiing.[17] They also produced VFX sequences to Sugarhouse.[18] In 2007, Nick won the Mobile and Internet TV Comedy Award at MIPCOM in Cannes.[19] In 2008, they created their Sting, a "quick taste at what's available at the Weakend".[20] In the same year, Nick created a YouTube channel for his company, WeakendAnimation. He joined YouTube on 1 February 2008.[21]While the company is shut down, the YouTube channel remains active. They also produced informercials for MBNA's insurance services.[22] In December 2009, Nick released the trailer for the third episode of Jeb's Jobs. Nick announced the episode in 2006. The third episode was uploaded to YouTube on 22 December 2010.[23]

In Episode 2, Mark Horwood was the theme tune composer and Andy Boyle recorded the live action scenes, and he also made the 'Making Of' featurette.[50][51]

Dancing Penis was created as an animation test for a comedy by Opiate Films.[52]

The movies were liked by many people around the world, with comments on message boards, emails, newsletters and forums.[55] MSN called Jeb "the first cantankerous Northerner to became a bona fide internet phenomenon".[55] People have contacted the company because they were not hearing any sounds while watching the movies. The company explained that the audio has been encoded as an MPEG 4 layer, which they believe it was only implemented in QuickTime.[56] In the first episode of Jeb's Jobs people has been if asking the movie Jeb was watching on his computer was porn.[57]
