Westcliff School of Skills is a special school for education in pre-vocational technical subjects, situated in Bellville, Western Cape, South Africa. It’s a South African Government School.

Founded[edit]

It was founded in 1953, and first started in Gardens, Cape Town. On 1 July 1956 it was recognized as a proper school. In 1961 it moved to Bellville. [2] The Bellville school were officially opened by the Head of Education in the Cape Province, DT Liebenberg on 24 March 1961. The first principal was F.J.O'Kennedy.

Need[edit]

It was establish for children who did not easily progress in a mainstream school. They then were referred to a school of special skills. The syllabus consists of academic and technical parts.It offer practical subjects like :Hairdressing. spray painting, panel beating and woodwork. [3] [4] [5]

Study period[edit]

Normally children are in the school for a period of five years. Its for children of normal high school age;grade 8 to finish grade 12.

Language and gender[edit]

It caters for both sexes and the school is bilingual (Afrikaans and English).

Need for tools and other practical instruments[edit]

Dr N.J. du Preez the Cape Province Educational Department's psychologist indicated that tools and practical instruments were needed for the school, in order to help pupils learning skills for their life after school. A long battle with the provincial department for finance took place, but eventually he succeeded.[6][7]

Hostel[edit]

It has a boys only Hostel. In 1964 the first pupils were accommodated. The hostel is named the Nick du Preez House. It is in recognition of Dr N J du Preez.[8]

Motto[edit]

The school motto is: “Labor Ornat” (Latin) which means “work detected”

Rugby[edit]

Westcliff were represented in the Western Province LSEN(Provincial side) under 18 rugby team, playing in the Craven Week for Western Province against other provinces:

2016- Eight players (36% of the provincial team) [9]

2017- Nine Players (41% of the provincial team) [10]

There are more than 50 schools in the province out of which the selectors choose.[11]

Jacquin Isaacs represent the South African School side.He played scrumhalf [12] [13]

Other[edit]

The school is involved in community projects, like decorating shopping centers at Christmas times. [14] [15]

The school was part of Leon Schuster movie Schuks Tshabalala's Survival Guide to South Africa in 2010. The school was involved in the technical side of the movie.
