James Joseph Dickens II, known professionally as Whitenoise, is an American rapper and graphic designer.[2][1] He is known for maintaining a golden age of hip hop style throughout the SoundCloud rap era.[citation needed] James is the most prominent Hip-Hop artist in Toledo.[3] He released his debut album, The Dickens LP, in 2022. He soon followed up later that year with his shorter project, The Trilogy EP.
Early life
James Joseph Dickens II was born on June 11, 1994, in Toledo, Ohio.[1][4] At the age of ten, Dickens was put into his aunt and uncle’s custody with his other two siblings after his mother was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.[5] James graduated from Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School in 2012. After the tragic passing of his father from Pancreatic cancer in 2014, he found his love for music.[3]
Career
2015-2020: Career beginnings
Dickens didn't actually come up with the stage name Whitenoise. The idea was given to him from a fan at an event after building popularity from performing freestyle rap for locals.[3] James began making music officially in 2015 with the start of his own record label.[2] In 2016, Whitenoise performed an opening act for Bone Thugs-n-Harmony at a venue in Toledo, Ohio.[3] Whitenoise spent a total of seven years establishing his brand name.[1] His debut album was supposed to be released in 2020 but was set back due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
2021-present: The Dickens LP, The Trilogy EP
In 2022, James took down another local Hip-Hop artist's catalog by obtaining the copyright to their music after the artist created a diss song about him in a late 2021 release. He also gained the copyright to all of the instrumentals on his album The Dickens LP that were originally being sold as YouTube beats to show he was a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
Artistry
Whitenoise's main influences include other rappers such as Ice Cube, Beastie Boys, Tupac Shakur, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Jay-Z, Eminem, Notorious BIG, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar and Juice Wrld.[3]
