Windsor Windows & Doors is a window and door manufacturing company serving the United States, Canada, and Mexico.[1] The company employs approximately 700 people[2] across three different manufacturing locations in the U.S.: West Des Moines, Iowa;[3] Norwalk, Iowa;[4] and Monroe, North Carolina.[5] The West Des Moines location is the company's corporate headquarters with a 340,000 square foot manufacturing facility that produces wood/clad windows and patio doors. The Norwalk location houses the company's vinyl window and patio door production plant, and the Monroe facility is responsible for production of cellular PVC (cPVC) windows and patio doors and wood/clad windows. Windsor Windows & Doors is a subsidiary of Woodgrain — the largest manufacturer of wood mouldings and interior pine doors in the United States.[1]
History
Windsor Windows & Doors began operations as a small business in Windsor Heights, Iowa in 1946, under the name Windsor Wood Working, Inc.. In the mid-1970s, the company moved to West Des Moines.[1]
In 1987, Windsor was purchased by Woodgrain Millwork, Inc. of Fruitland, Idaho. The acquisition allowed Windsor to expand its market. The number of distributors has grown from 170 in 1987,[1] to roughly 250 dealers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.[6]
In 1993, Windsor added a second manufacturing location - the former Heritage plant in Monroe, North Carolina.[7]
In 2017, Windsor broke ground on a 160,000 square foot facility on a 27-acre site in Norwalk, Iowa, a small community south of Des Moines.[8] This expansion project earned them a 2018 Economic Impact Award from the Greater Des Moines Partnership and the Des Moines Business Record.[9]
Product Divisions
Windsor manufactures three product lines: Pinnacle wood/clad windows and patio doors, Next Dimension vinyl windows and patio doors, and Legend cellular PVC windows and patio doors.
- Pinnacle products are available in three species of wood: select pine, Douglas fir, and natural alder. The extruded aluminum cladding is available in several colors.[10]
- Next Dimension products are made from extruded multi-chamber vinyl.[10]
- Legend products are made from solid cellular PVC, a substance which has an appearance similar to painted wood but provides the low-maintenance and durability of vinyl.[10] Legend also comes in a hybrid option that combines a cellular PVC frame with a wood clad sash.[11]
In 2016, Windsor introduced a line of replacement windows, called Revive. Revive is available as pocket replacement or sash replacement in Pinnacle wood/clad, Next Dimension vinyl, and Legend cPVC hybrid.[12]
Community Involvement
Windsor Windows & Doors is actively involved in the communities where their facilities reside:
- For more than 13 years, Windsor team members have participated in Habitat for Humanity builds in the Des Moines, Iowa and Monroe, North Carolina areas.[13][14][15]
- Each year since 2015, team members have had the opportunity to volunteer their time at the Special Olympics Iowa - Summer Games, in Ames, Iowa.[16][17][18][19]
- Both the West Des Moines and Monroe plants regularly sponsor blood drives,[20] host meal packaging events at the Food Bank of Iowa, [21][22] and participate in other charitable activities.
- In 2016, Windsor initiated an Employee Home Makeover program, designed to show appreciation for their employees and to help improve their lives.[23] Employees can submit an application and a committee reviews and selects a project for that quarter, with a goal of four projects per year. Fellow employees volunteer their time, and the cost of the materials is paid for by Windsor.[24]
