Woland (Russian: Воланд, romanized: Voland) is an upcoming Russian drama-fantasy film directed by Mikhail Lokshin. The film will be loosely based on the Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita.[3]
Plot[edit]
Moscow, 1930s. An rising writer in Moscow finds himself at the center of a literary scandal. His works are no longer being staged, his colleagues actively avoid him, and in days he turns into an outcast. Soon afterwards he meets Margarita, who becomes his lover and his muse. Revived by her love and support, the Master begins his new novel, where all the characters are his colleagues, and the protagonist- the intriguing Woland, whose prototype is a foreigner that the Master met not long ago. As the Master sinks himself deeper and deeper into his work, he gradually stops noticing, that his reality and imagination are one and the same.

By 2021, however, the project still had not taken off, partially because of the COVID-19 pandemic. At some point in the project, Lebedev had left the project, and was working instead on his film Nuremberg. Instead, Mikhail Lokshin, director of The Silver Skates is set to direct the film.[7]
Filming began in July 2021 in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Yalta, and is scheduled to continue to November 2021.
In July 2021, August Diehl was confirmed to join the film as Woland. The film will be Diehl's first project in Russia.[8]
