The Women In Arts Award is an independent award, founded in 2019 by UN Women Ukraine and Ukrainian Institute as a part of the HeForShe solidarity movement for gender equality. The award aims to draw attention to the tremendous achievements of female artists and publicly appreciate their contributions to the art sphere. The Women in Arts award lays the ground for a new tradition in Ukrainian art history to emerge, becoming an important milestone in Ukrainian cultural development and inspiring women towards new achievements.;[1]
History[edit]
In 2019 UN Women Ukraine and the Ukrainian Institute established the Women In Arts Award with the aim of supporting and promoting the professional advancement of women in the field of arts and culture of Ukraine nationally and internationally, as well as breaking gender stereotypes and eliminating inequalities.[2]
Historically, women have had fewer opportunities for realisation in art and cultural spheres, which is why their work remains mostly invisible in art history and is still rarely available to the wider public.[3][4] This Award aims to establish a new tradition of recognising women’s work both in Ukraine, and internationally – highlighting the huge contributions and that women artists accomplish every year, and at the same time to emphasize the importance of linking artists from generation to generation.[5]
The first Women In Arts Award ceremony was held on 13 March 2019 as a part of HeForShe Arts Week[6] celebration in Ukraine. In 2019, the Women In Arts Award was presented to five laureates in the following nominations:
- Visual arts;
- Music;
- Theatre and film;
- Literature;
- Cultural management.
Regulations[edit]
Every year, the Organising Committee invites independent Expert Council and Expert Jury to select nominees and laureates of the Award. The Expert Council and the Expert Jury may include experts in the fields of literature, visual arts, music, theatre and cinema, cultural management and other specialists in the targeted fields.
When creating the list of nominees for the Award, the Expert Council takes into account the candidates’ professional experience, contributions at national and international levels, compliance with the contemporary local and international art trends, openness to innovative methods, and actual achievements. The experts evaluate the candidate’s potential to qualitatively influence the development of the Ukrainian culture, their impact in their relevant field of work and other important factors, considered by the Award’s regulations.
The composition of the Expert Jury is governed by the principle of annual rotation: the laureates of the past year’s award are automatically included in the Expert Jury of the following year.
Candidates for the Women In Arts Award are selected within the following categories:
- Visual Arts: authors working with a variety of media, including sculpture, painting, new media, and more.
- Music: authors of musical works, may also be performers, with focus on composers, the quality of their work and the importance of their contribution to the development of the Ukrainian contemporary music;
- Theatre and Film: the award combines two areas and offers to pay attention to women of the following professions in theatre and cinema: directors, actresses, screenwriters;
- Literature: the category focuses on women that choose literature as their profession: writers and poets;

Women in Arts Award Statuette[edit]
The Women in Arts statuette was created by the contemporary Ukrainian sculptor Maria Kulikovska[10] in a form of interlaced women’s hands. In the words of the artist, they symbolise support and protection, as well as women’s work. The artist replicated the form of her own hands to create the sculpture.[11]
The Organising Committee[edit]
The Award is jointly organised by UN Women and the Ukrainian Institute.
UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes, and services needed to implement these standards. In Ukraine, UN Women focuses on three mutually reinforcing priority areas:
- Governance and Participation;
- Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls;
- Women, Peace and Security.
The Ukrainian Institute is a public institution that promotes Ukrainian culture internationally and develops cultural links between Ukraine and other countries. Established in 2017 by the Government of Ukraine, the Institute is affiliated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The institution co-founded the Award after joining the global HeForShe solidarity movement, becoming one of the first Ukrainian public institutions to join the initiative.[12]
Created by UN Women, the HeForShe solidarity movement for gender equality provides a systematic approach and targeted platform on which men and boys can engage and become change agents towards the achievement of gender equality. Since its launch on 20 September, 2014, at the United Nations by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson, Heads of State, CEOs, and global luminaries, from all walks of life have committed to gender equality.
In Ukraine, the HeForShe movement was launched in 2018, enabled by the financial support from Sweden.[13]
