Woojer is a Israel-based startup specialized in haptic devices. Founded in 2011 and operating in the United States, Israel and Taiwan, Woojer produces several compact haptics products that have numerous applications, mainly in entertainment fields such as music, film, VR, AR, MR and video games.[2] Additional applications include therapeutics and the automotive technology. The technology also enables deaf and hard of hearing to engage in activities they are usually precluded from, such as listening to music or the audio of video games.[3][4]
History[edit]
Woojer was founded in 2011 by Israeli and American entrepreneurs. The initial aim was to duplicate the experience of live music when listening with headsets. One of the founders, a sound engineer, have the idea after experiencing the tactile sensation of a passing bus while listening to music simultaneously. He sought to recreate this sensation with a novel actuator and teamed up with the other founders to realize the technology.
The company name is derived from the word "woofer", as the Woojer tactile experience was originally similar to that of a wearable woofer. Woojer ran a successful Kickstarter campaign in December 2013.[5] Woojer's proof of concept product officially launched in September 2014. Pre-Sale of second-generation products Strap & Vest commenced in January 2017.[6]
Backers[edit]
Notable backers of Woojer are Peter Chou, founder and ex-CEO of HTC and father of VIVE, and Eli Harari, the founder and ex-CEO of SanDisk and receiver of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.[7][8][9]
