Woven is a single-player Adventure Game, for Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The game was also made available for Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux, on Steam. The game was first released November 15th, 2019 by Alterego Games, a Dutch video game developer based in Zeist. This company was founded by Dominic de Graaf and Matthijs Kramer in 2014.

Woven is blend between an exploration game and an adventure game. Players search for hidden secrets, customize their avatar with different shapes and play through a story that is narrated in rhyme..[1]

Plot[edit]

In a world that is made out of wool and fabric, a clumsy elephant plushie and an amnesic firefly meet each other and decide to solve the mystery of an invasion by metal insects. They have to overcome their fear to get to the moon and find clues that explain the history of the world and why the metal insects are here[2]

Characters[edit]

  • Stuffy An anthropomorphic elephant plushie that is not very smart and is lost in the world. He has the wish to fly and explore the world.
  • Glitch A metal robot companion that has lost his memories and wants to journey to the moon.

Development[edit]

The game was first envisioned by Creative Director Vincent da Silva in 2011 as a concept called ‘The Stuffies’[3] which featured different animal plushies to mix to create different characters. There was little to no story written at the time. He joined the game studio Alterego Games in 2017[4], the studio decided to do a kickstarter campaign together, to gain funding for the project. The kickstarter failed to reach it's €85.000,- goal.[5] Even though the studio would keep devoting spare time to the project, full-time development was stopped[6]

In 2019 the studio decided[7] to start development without external funding. When the game was halfway finished, the team was joined by Dutch publisher StickyLock, who helped the studio with both marketing and budget to finish and launch the game. The game was finished and launched November 15th, 2019.[8]

Reception[edit]

Woven received moderate to mostly positive reviews, being praise for its plot, voice acting, game stability and unique 3D artstyle. However, it's control-schemes and puzzle difficulty were met with criticism.

Gamer Guys and Gals scored Woven an 8,2 praising the fabric world, storytelling and lack of game glitches, but missing an manual save functionality.[9] Woven was scored a 9 out of 10 by Gamespace which wrote ‘If you’re needing a slice of comfort wrapped in poetry or some good old fashion handcrafting even in a digitally dominant world where machines are trying to take over – Woven is perfect for you”[10]. Xbox Tavern scored Woven 7 saying “What’s most apparent about Woven is that it is clearly a labor of love and the game’s environment is very refined in its structure.” [11]. PSU criticised the game's puzzles for being frustrating, saying “A game clearly crafted with love and great care, But which still made me want to yank out all my hair.” Writing their review in rhyme.[12] Games.cz scored Woven with 70 out of 100 points for being “a cute, novel game in a creative world full of fun puzzles”, while QueueTimes scored the game 9 out of ten stating “The quality of the voice over for the narrator is outstanding, with the performance by the British VO, David Seys, who adds a grumpy yet refined tone to the presentation, making this a perfect experience for parents and children to enjoy together.”[13]

Woven was also met with positive reviews by Dutch reviewers receiving an 76 from XO-NL, a 7 from reviewer XBW and “Two thumbs up” from ladiesgamer.nl[14][15][16]
