Wurzel Mediengruppe is a consortium of twelve German enterprises at six locations, whose services include digital printing, sheet-fed and web-fed offset printing, book production, photography and media design, virtual reality applications and mobile apps.[2] The Group ranks among the ten largest commercial printers in Baden-Wuerttemberg.[3] Part of the consortium is, among others, Dr. Cantz‘sche Druckerei Medien, which is an international leader[4] in the printing of art publications of a reproduction quality true to the original, and which also compiles and maintains the catalogue raisonné of important artists such as Ernst Wilhelm Nay[5] and Gerhard Richter. Cantz became internationally famous in 1968 with the printing of the Bauhaus exhibition catalog in Stuttgart.[6] Since then, Cantz has made a name for himself in the art world and especially in the world of American museums, such as the MoMA in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.[7]
History[edit]
The foundation stone for Wurzel Mediengruppe was laid by Heinz Wurzel in 2002 with the takeover of the Scheel printers in Waiblingen. Since then, the skilled printer has further expanded the company. Against the industry trend[8], he gradually acquired or founded the 12 companies that belong to the Group today. Some of these companies, such as Cantz, Schaupp, Schefenacker and Wirtz have a long tradition and were saved from being closed down.[9] Since its foundation, the number of employees and the turnover has grown continuously. Overall, the Group today employs a total of 365 staff and generates about 50 million Euros in annual sales.[10] These developments have mainly been thanks to the combination of printed materials and new media.[11] The Group is led by the proprietor Heinz Wurzel. The headquarters was at Waiblingen until 2017. In October 2017, the company’s headquarters and most of the companies moved to a new building in Esslingen. Further locations are in Baden-Baden, Düsseldorf[12], Ingolstadt, Schwäbisch Hall and Speyer.

Reviews[edit]
Shortly after the takeover of the Schaupp printing company in Schwäbisch Hall in 2012, Wurzel Mediengruppe intended to lay off employees because of the high investment volume caused by environmental regulations.[17] Schaupp was technically in a much worse condition than expected. By agreeing with the employees and the Environmental Agency in 2014, large investments were made and the company was able to survive.[18]
