X-Men '97 is an upcoming American superhero animated television series for the streaming service Disney+ produced by Marvel Studios, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the X-Men. It serves as a revival of the 1990s animated series X-Men, and the plot will continue where the original series left off.

Beau DeMayo will serve as showrunner, while several cast members from the original series are set to reprise their roles. It is the first X-Men project produced by Marvel Studios, as well as the studios' first non-Marvel Cinematic Universe project not released under the Marvel Television brand.[1]

The series was announced in November 2021, and is scheduled to premiere in 2023 on Disney+.

Cast and characters

Several cast members of the original series are set to reprise their roles, while others will voice new roles:[2]

Additionally, Alyson Court, Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and A.J. Locascio have been cast in undisclosed roles.[3] Court will not be voicing Jubilation Lee / Jubilee as she did in the original series; Court has previously expressed her desire for an Asian-American actress to portray the character.[2]

Production

Development

In 2019, producer and director of the original series Larry Houston stated that he had conversations with Disney about bringing back the animated series.[4] As development on the first season of What If...? neared its conclusion, executives at Marvel Studios began discussing their next animated project. One of the first ideas proposed and approved was a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series, which was cited by many filmmakers as the reason they became fans of Marvel.[3] By June 2021, Marvel Studios was developing a slate of at least three more animated series in addition to What If...? that,[5][6] as of August 2021, were in various stages of development and likely would not debut until 2023.[7]

In November 2021, X-Men '97 was announced, which will be a revival and continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series.[8][9] Beau DeMayo, who served as a writer for Marvel Studios' Moon Knight, was announced as showrunner.[2][3] Houston and writers Eric and Julia Lewald will serve as consultants.[10]

Writing

Aiming to stay faithful to the original series, most of the production team hired for the revival were either fans or part of the team for the original version. The revival will update the series for modern audiences and explore how the characters changed following the turn of the millennium, while also paying homage to the original series.[3]

Release

X-Men '97 will be released on Disney+ in 2023.[8]
