Xavier School, Gamharia, opened in 2017, is a part of the kindergarten through post-graduate school complex of Xavier Institute for Tribal Education (XITE) founded by the Jamshedpur Province of the Society of Jesus. It is a Christian religious minority institution, open to all peoples but with Christians and tribals given preference for admission.[1]
Background
Xavier is managed by the governing Board of XITE but run by the school administration under the principal, Jesuit Fr. Kuruvilla Verunkal.[2] The school covers classes from kindergarten through standard 10.[3]
Tata is a special benefactor of the complex and the children of employees are given preference for admission. The whole XITE complex is seen as stemming migration from the Gamharia area.[4] The school received Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICSE) accreditation in time for the first graduation in 2017.[5][6][7]
Activities
The school has an active, elected Student Council. All students are required to participate in between one and three clubs. Choices include: astronomy, biology & environment, physics & chemistry, mathematics, computer, philately, elocution & entertainment, dramatics (English/Hindi), debate, press, adventure & nature, Cubs and Bulbuls, Scouts and Guides, Duke of Edinburgh Entertainment, and G. K. club. There are also social service and leadership camps and a drum & bugle corps. In the health and sports area, options offered are: gymnasium, athletics, football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, handball, and badminton.[8]
The students do social work in conjunction with the local chapter of Rotary International.[9]
