Cortlen Malik Henry (born January 24, 1999),[1] known professionally as YNW Bortlen (backronym for Young Nigga World Bortlen), is an American rapper, a member of the collective "YNW". He is most popular for his debut song, “Been Thru”[2]
Alongside YNW Melly, he is a suspect in the murder of YNW SakChaser and YNW Juvy.
Early life and education[edit]
Cortlen Malik Henry was born on January 24, 1999 in Gifford, Florida, and attended Vero Beach High School.[3] Bortlen has 1 sister. He grew up with his ex girlfriend as however he stayed with his father when he wasn’t in jail.[4] Not much is known about his mother however Bortlen posted a picture of her on his Instagram story wishing a happy birthday with a baby picture of him and his mother.
Career[edit]
Music roots[edit]
YNW Bortlen’s early music career had started by recording music for his cousin JGreen and YNW Melly. Years after this, at the rise of Melly’s career, Bortlen and Melly were in the studio and he decided to try rapping and Melly encouraged him saying his music is good. [4]
Inspirations[edit]
His music is heavily inspired by rappers such as Future, Boosie Badazz, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, and Young Scooter as he frequently listened to them while growing up. He also listened to some of his father’s favourite artists such as B.G.. [4]
2018-2021[edit]
In 2018, YNW Bortlen had begun to make music and had adopted the stage name YNW Bortlen by joining rap collective YNW. After the release of his first single “Came From” which is only available on YouTube. After being released on bond in 2020, Bortlen began to drop many notable songs such as “Been Thru”, “Lovey Dovey” Ft. Toosii, and “Young N*gga Sh*t”. After being locked up in April 2021 again, he released a popular leaked song, “Dedication” Ft. Hotboii. After being released on bond yet again in August 2021, he released highly anticipated Triller (app) snippet, “What It Cost”.
Legal issues[edit]
Henry was arrested on June 30, 2018 in Fort Myers, Florida for possession of weapon or ammo by convicted felon.[5]
In February 2019, Henry was arrested in Texas, extradited to Florida, and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of being an accessory after the fact in the shooting deaths of his childhood friends YNW SakChaser and YNW Juvy on October 26, 2018; YNW Melly, another childhood friend, is accused of both murders.[3][6] Both pleaded not guilty; after a series of hearings, Henry was granted bail in May 2020[7] and was released while awaiting trial.[8] He was re-arrested on April 8, 2021, after his ankle monitor revealed that he violated his pre-trial release agreement by going not only to work but also to a residence and a strip club.[9][10] On August 19, 2021, Henry was released on Level 1 house arrest with electronic tagging.[11] The trial date was officially set for March 7, 2022.[12]
