Michelle (Burmese: မီရှဲ; born on 04 August 1993), is a lifestyle blogger, model and inspirational speaker operating under the title YangonThu Michelle [1], co-founder and lead trainer of Myanmar Women's Self Defense Center (MWSDC)[2][3], in Yangon, Myanmar. She is the recipient of the "Influencer of the Year 2018 (Lifestyle) award" from Myanmar Influencer Awards.[4] Her content mostly focuses on the lifestyle of a Yangon citizen,[1] preserving cultural heritage across Myanmar, and women empowerment.[5] She has been featured in The Myanmar Times,[1] MODA Magazine,[5] Democratic Voice of Burma,[6][7] and The Irrawaddy.[8] She has produced more than a hundred videos on her social media channels on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and her website. The contents range from everyday hairstyles, emergency first-aid, to discovering unique locations across Myanmar.
Early life
Michelle was born on 04 August 1993 in Yangon, Myanmar. She graduated with B.A (English) and also earned a Diploma in English from the University of Foreign Languages, Yangon in 2013. [9] She began working as a full-time translator for a local business after graduating.[5]
Miss Environment Winner
Michelle competed with waist number 5 in the Miss Universe Myanmar 2013 pageant, held for the first time since 1961, and made it into the top 20.[9] She received the title award "Miss Environment 2013".[10]
Co-Founder of Myanmar Women's Self-Defense Center (MWSDC)
Michelle experienced sexual harassment for the first time during her teenage years on a bus in Yangon. According to her, she was shocked and at a loss as to what to do.[8] Simultaneously, she understood that the law enforcement in Myanmar is weak on sexual harassment and assault.[11] This marked the beginning of her journey to learn self-defense. She joined the kickboxing class at the YMCA in Yangon during her first year at the university.[5][6]
She demonstrated self-defense techniques during the talent portion of the Miss Universe Myanmar 2013 pageant. She was later contracted by Akhaya Women Myanmar, an independent women's rights group to teach self-defense techniques to local women.[5][11]

Soon after, Michelle co-founded the Myanmar Women's Self-Defense Center (MWSDC) with three other female acquaintances and took the role of lead instructor. MWSDC is the first women's self-defense center in Myanmar and aims to enable women to protect themselves from sexual harassment,[12] to build confidence,[13] and ensure that the women of Myanmar are aware of the laws that exist to protect them.[14]
Lifestyle blogger
Michelle began uploading videos for her YangonThu Michelle program to Facebook on February 2018, and also had them broadcasted on the Mizzima TV broadcast channel[1] and iFlix.[15] Her program covers specific topics such as historical sites and prominent landmarks, the day-to-day lifestyle of Myanmar women,[1] and women empowerment videos. A video she uploaded on March 16, 2018 showing her trying on and purchasing clothes from used-clothing retailers, quickly gained widespread recognition.[5] She received the Myanmar Influencer Award 2018 in the Lifestyle category.[4]
